Broken part - what is this?
Greetings - I was doing an oil change yesterday and noticed this piece just laying on top of the engine. Last people under the hood were the body shop (major hail damage) - what is this part? I tried searching the diagrams on realoem but couldn't figure it out.
Thanks! -Brandon

This breaks in EVERY e90. Mine just rests on the engine. That part is the entire rear portion if the engine bay and also houses the cabin air filter. Not really worth replacing. The part that breaks is number 2 on this diagram: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...28&hg=64&fg=10
The bracket that holds the wires usually doesn't break.

Thanks for the quick reply! Glad to hear it's not a major issue. Do these parts just break on their own? Or is it typically from someone leaning on it? I still have CPO and may swing it by BMW to see if they'll replace it.

It breaks in it's own for the most part. The heat cycles from the engine make the plastic brittle. That part is removable and usually breaks when you pull it out say when you have to change the cabin air filter.

I removed the broken pieces (they slide out) pushed the rail back to the slots and fixed it with screws.

Yup, mine broke with just a slight amount of me leaning on it when I was removing my BMS PBX
I couldn't stand looking at it laying on top of engine, & broke down a bought new cowl base...
