I possibly did something very foolish

I did an oil change with 5w-20 Castrol Edge Syntec (american formula) in my 2008 e92 328i.
I was a bit drunk..I said ah fuck it...but now im stressin pretty bad.

Should I change my oil immediately?
Thanks for the advice.

As SOCOM states below, you used the wrong weight oil for the N52 and it should be changed right away.

Changed my original reply to:

However if you had used the proper weight oil 5W-30, American Syntec is good oil, but doesn't carry BMW's LL01 spec rating, so one should not take it to the average 15,000 OCI the Conditioned Based Service (CBS) system will want the oil changed. Before BMW started selling BMW-branded Castrol, I used American Castrol Syntec for years in my wife's Z3 (currently with 160,000 miles on it), which routinely went 9,500 miles between changes and have not had an issue.

Next time be sober and just buy the oil change kit from Tischer on line. It's easy, gets shipped to your house and the cost of shipping is about the same as driving to the store to buy oil anyway.

Change it. Your bearings won't survive on a 20 weight oil. BMW doesn't spec a 20w anywhere in the world.

Oh, wait, I didn't read his post correctly and that he put in 5W-20. I agree with you, the weight spec is not correct and he should change the oil out. Thanks for pointing that out, I gave initially gave bad advice.

More importantly, the OP shouldn't drink and buy oil!

Dang. Thank you so much guys..
I drove about 500 miles so far on the 5w-20, so I hope i haven't already caused irreversible damage :/
I just ordered the proper oil kit from getbmwparts and will be changing my oil ASAP!!

I doubt you did any harm in 500 miles. Over long-time use it could be an issue, but not 500 miles. It's not like you starved the bearings of oil. I'd expect it to have more of an issue with operation of the VANOS system more that bearing damage.

I've noticed some lifter ticking/knocking sounds coming from my engine, and I think this is a common problem..
I still have about a year and a quarter left on CPO warranty, so hopefully if some issues do come about the dealership will take care of it for me.

Thanks for your reply, as it does give me some peace of mind.

You should just be fine, as long as your didn't track your car, beat it really hard or drive it for an extended time with the wrong weight, your also in Cali, so the mild weather helps.

I don't know why you even have incorrect oil laying around anyway unless you have another car, keep a stock of Castrol Syntec 0-30 Euro Formula or Mobil 1 0-40, I have 30 bottles on the shelf at any time thats just backup I use Motul oils.
