Trade 328xi for 335xi ? Opinions wanted.
Hey guys,
Would you trade a 2007 328xi with 68km on it for a 2008 335i with 150km on it? Supposedly the 328 is worth about 11k and the 335 is worth 8k, according to auto trader.ca the 328 doesn't have navi or leather seats, bass body kid, no adaptive lights, but everything else is there. sun roof, sound, Aso I did the DIY intake mods and i3m manifold + bimmerlabs tune. The 335 is fully loaded and equip with JB4 stage 1. The seller is my brother in law who is a mechanic and is a registered dealer. he's also able to add in warranty. He's saying he'd take mine as a trade + 1000. He's also got some headers he can add in, and a massive blow off valve (not sure i care about that). since i did my own 328 conversion to 330, i'm not afraid to tinker and do maintenance on a 335, though I know it's gonna be a learning curve. Thanks for your opinions. |

Keep the 328 if you value a reliable car that should last many more years....that 335 is going to have a feast on your wallet but its your call.....335 will be a mixed bag im sure.
at 68k your 328 is barely broken in engine wise....replace all gaskets as they go and other components. 335 is a tuner car and comes with the headaches. |

The N54 is a hit or miss engine.. I'd stay away from the 07/08 models. N52 is damn near bullet proof; I had a 07 328 back in the day and never had any issues.

Sorry but some clarification... the deal is trade + 1000$ as in you pay an extra g?
Or you get 1k cash after trade? Either way, I see it as not a very good deal, or a really shitty deal. Lol. If you really want an e90 335i, I would take my time and find a nice, low km car and sell the 328ix privately. If you are only doing this because it is what you can afford to get into a 335i, then I wouldn't do it. But then hey, that is just me. I have a 2007 328i that I would only ever get rid of for either a Guilia QV or a Cayman. That new Cayman T is looking pretty interesting... But back on track. I have spent more than the price difference to a 335i on my car in performance mods, and have never considered a 335i. I don't know what is available for the xi for suspension mods, but my 328i is a very, very sharp tool. |

If you want a faster car or the potential get the n54. If you want reliable car with less maintenance keep what you have. Its really that simple imo. I have owned both. I prefer the n54 but I want a fast car...

So the 335 is taken care of by my brother in law and it is fully loaded. Mine is not, and yes it is a faster car.
Are the 335 really that bad on maintenance or are people just overly pessimistic? I wish i can have both |

Even then, it seems that situation is less common, and really requires all previous owners be of that responsible nature. Even if it's been well maintained, maintenance will be higher on an N54. A less maintained example will add even more expense through repairs/issues etc. If you prioritize speed, and are willing to sacrifice some reliability and peace of mind, go for it. Otherwise, N52 with 260-275 HP (via 3 stage intake you already seem to have) is probably a compromise that gives you the best of both worlds. Not a slow car. Just not "fast", and obv limited potential for additional power mods.

If the 335xi was owned by your brother in law and you know that he took care of it well, i would probably jump on the 335. Imo the horror stories on the n54 are not bad, it's anecdotal but I've never had any issues on mine. Mine is FBO and was a daily driver for years. It's never left me stranded, my subaru on the other hand.....

I was going to buy a subaru before i had the 328xi. Glad i went 328 as after the 330 conversion is was a real sweet heart car.
My borther in law is a dealer/mechanic so he let me trade me 328 to him and now i have 335 w/ JB4, no other mods YET, and a warranty. interesting that the 335 is way better on gas than the 328. 328 was giving me like 340sh KM per tank. I'm at 300 now with 1/4 tank to go with the 335. That's basically gonna be 50-75 bucks savings a month. $25 a tank. |

That doesn't sound right at all. Spirited driving should net you around 450, casual around 600, and highway only can stretch to 800+
I've compared my 2.5L N52 to several others with the 3L N52 (mostly in 328 form) and all are pretty much within that range.

Trading a 328i for a 335i is like dumping your chubby girlfriend of 10 years for a instagram model that you know will screw you over within the first month.
Because you forgot what excitement felt like, you will enjoy getting screwed over on a monthly basis and even ask for more. |

328 is a great daily driver. I wouldn't take the 335 with 150k miles. Save up for one with less miles and a later model. I suggest the N55, or an M car.

That's what people say but I never saw that sort of fuel economy. It's possible just how I drove, but without the 330i software in place from bimmer labs you little rally were depressing that pedal 50% to get the car to respond.

I made the 328 into a great daily driver, but with stock mappings that car is boring to drive. Even my friends who rode it in before and after the 330 tune said it was night and day difference with power delivery. I wouldn't say 328 is a great daily to anyone that enjoyed cars and driving. Even with 330 tune, the only other thing you can do to the car to get more power is MILVS, and pay $1000 for a custom tune to use them. At that point you're buying a 335. 335 are incredible value for the power you're getting. The day after I got mine I saw one for sale, 10k and only 100k km on it. and it was the same colour, monico blue. ohhh I wish I had that car for the KM and the colour, Oh well that's life. time to enjoy my crazy car. thanks for everyone's help. |

You can not get the 330 tune on a 328 unless you install a 3 stage intake. Yes you can do more to the car . For example aa headers. No need to worry about emissions because there isnt goi g to be any anymore and even if there was your car will still pass. Milvs and headers are about the same price after is all set and done All together if you do labour yourself is around 2200$ -2500$ including a reputable tune like bpc or aa. Problema with thr 335 is that you are not fsctoring in the cost of maintenance.new turbos alone is 3000k. I ve was also in the market for a 335. And all the cheap ones still had all the key maintenance items left to replace. The clean ones with all those items taken care of are going for a lot higher. 335 is a good deal for what u get however maintenance is the problems. You are talking about a couple of grand just like that... someone buying an old car probably does not have 2-4k laying around after they just spent 10k on a car |
