Your own urine.

If that doesn't work, Jungle Formula is pretty good.

As much as I love pissing all over myself I'll give the urine a miss.

Any advance on Jungle Formula?

That looks good. The DEET ones seem to be the best ones.

Avon Skin So Soft.

I done a cycle event in the North West of Scotland and we were plagued with midges. After a near fist fight for the Skin So Soft, which I was sceptical about, you could see the midges still on you but no bites.

In every shop we were in there were wide gaps on the shelfs where the stuff had sold out.

+1 for the DEET. This generally is thought to be the best chemical repellent - so the more of that you can find in the formula the better!

DEET will work but also be are that it will melt plastic - just something to think about before smothering yourself in it I believe the squaddies in Afghanistan swear by the Avon stuff

Well, cheers guy. After having a browse, seems like the recommended Repel 100 is the way to go. Doesn't seem to be anything better on the market.

Thanks again!

As above Jungle Forumla, anything with 50% DEET (100% seems a little OTT, especially when I've seen 50% eat the rubber seals on my kayak cag!) or the Avon stuff (I use it all the time when climbing and its gentle on your skin [leaves you smelling like a puff though]). I use Life Systems 50 now and never have any problems.

Do you have Hayfever?

If so, switch to using Flixonase nasal spray. It's steroid based and because of this the little swines don't like the smell/taste of you! When we go on holiday I never normally use any repellent and hardly ever get bitten.

Other than that, when in Sri Lanka (mental amount of mozzies) we used Jungle formula.

Deet is the the active ingredient that works best.

If you can get a product that is more like a hand lotion consistency than like a liquid spray, you'll find it to work best as it'll stay on you longer and not leave that oily feeling.

I usually go to REI to buy such products. If you can find a good outdoorsy store, I'm sure you'll find a similar product there in the UK.

This is the stuff I use: http://www.rei.com/product/686229

As said, Deet formulation but it will eat rubber and plastics and destroy car steering wheels as you drive and touch plastics in the car. Also tyres, tents, jackets etc if used too liberally as a spray.
