Diesel or Petrol for my short commute?
Good morning all,
I have been lurking these forums for a while now and been a member for a short period and this is my first post, so hello I have a 2010 lci 320d e92, now I love this car and it has all the extras I need / want but my work commute is changing soon. At the moment I travel about 8 miles (15 mins) to work, all of which is at 70mph and I'm getting 44mpg day in day out, which is perfect. But, my office is relocating which is closer to my house so my commute will be 4 miles (10 mins) and these roads are 30mph and 60mph so not even reaching 70. My question is, is the shorted commute going to be bad for the Diesel engine? Will it get up to temperature? Or will I be better off going for a petrol engine e92? Would only consider a 6cyl engine, 325i or the 330i. I do the odd long trip where the diesel will come into its element but these trips are not all the time, only the odd one! Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom |

I had a 330d LCI, commuted 10 miles each way from home and got 36mpg.
I moved in June to a location 4 miles each way and the 330d went once i knew I was moving. I loved it but felt that kind of journey on it's own was going to kill it. It is OK if you do one other 'significant' journey probably once a week ... but if not you are going to get problems with the DPF being unable to generate. I replaced the 330d with a Z4 35iS ... the relocation gave me the excuse I do still use my Smart diesel to work but as only 4 miles I give it a long run every week and it has been fine since June. |

I don't do a significant trip once a week, there will be times that I'll hardly use the car at weekends tbh.
So loads of short trips (4 miles) is going to cause some problems with the dpf? I have BMW warranty until June '15 so is that something they would sort if I did have dpf issues? I do like the idea of a 6cyl petrol engine though, hmmmmm |

Run or cycle 4 miles per day..
Not worth the tax, insurance, servicing costs and hassle of a car for that short a journey. Get a weekend toy instead! E36 M3, TVR etc...

I moved closer to my old work, which was 3 miles away. If I wasn't moving jobs I'd have bought a bike and pocketed some £££'s then gone and bought something silly which drinks all the petrol I saved. I did run a few times, it's definitely a good thing to do. You'll feel so much better from the exercise. Cycling 4 miles is about 20 minutes at a leisurely pace so that's even easier.. |

Also, I am a bridge inspector so I need to keep PPE in my car just incase I get called onsite etc etc. So cycling is a 110% no |

Yes, diesels take a while to warm. It depends on the engine though. Smaller engines warm quicker. I wouldn't bother changing your car though unless you have the itch. The cost of changing is pretty high. Just make sure you take it out for a burn every now and then.

I'm in the same boat to be honest and still even looking at my options. New potential job just 10-15min drive and say 30mins cycle... which is quiet relaxing after a full day stuck in the office... but again... neither a D or a P would be warm enough so catch 22.
Do I stick to the 335D and drive it to work and take it for the occasional run in on wknds (often with nowhere to go), or sell up, get a petrol and enjoy best of both worlds.. |
