320si intermittent starting problem

I've been having some intermittent starting problems where starting can take 15-20 seconds in some cases.

During my recent service I reported this to the dealer expecting them to say what starting problem.....Which they initially did!

But then they rang me back an hour later to say they had managed to see the symptoms. Their initial diagnosis is that the timing needs to adjusted forward by 1/4. But they would need to check with BMW HQ as the are some issues with my engine.....

The dealer told me that some other 3 series have had this problem.
Anyone had similiar problems?

hi mate my 320si makes a funny noise when started sometimes, and has took a long time to start a few times like yours also the idle has seemed rough when first started lately have not yet took it back to dealer

My car is booked in to have some "engine timing parts" changed on the 21st and 22nd June. I'll let you all know what was changed.

mine sounds 'lumpy' when started but this is part of the 'special' wtcc engine I believe

At the moment mine sounds like a 15 year old banger on start up.

It sounds like its choking and has problems maintaining its revs constant.

I know the sound of it being healthy and mine isn't healthy. Just glad that BMW dealer admitted they seen the problem 1st hand

Hmm sounds like a new timing chain is going to be fitted on my car.

Its a bit poor to mess up the timing chain on such a low product build that has been part hand finished. Its something i'd expect VW to do like their cock up on the V5 engine.

New Si owner - rough idle after going through downpour

Hello
Just on my second week of si ownership, excellent car by the way.
GWLS has given me the link to the forum as we converse on another club site and after having problems with rough idle after starting the si yesterday morning hey presto there is a running link on the subject.

Does this sound familiar-
Monday was driving through big downpours car was fine, yesterday started the si and had really rough idle sounded like 3 pots firing and revs seem to go up to compensate. Driving the car there was no loss of performance but changing gears and the revs dropping towards idle gave uneven running. Left the car parked for a couple of hours thinking the engine bay heat might dry up moisture on whatever was causing problem.
No luck so called into BMW Sycamores in Peterborough (really good response even though I hadn't bought the car from them) half an hour later the Tech. explained that something had caused the idle map in the computer to drop out and go into emergency run mode this hadn't affected the the main engine map he had reprogrammed the computer and it was back to normal (I subsequently did about 15 start stops during the afternoon all ok) the tech further explained that the early E90 had an engine management loom issue causing similar problems that required them to be replaced. 06 cars shouldn't have the problem but if I had the problem again he would look at changing the loom and meanwhile would report the problem to the BMW Techs problem centre. A short break while I just start the car as we had storms again last night... Si starts fine also cild start came in which didn't happen when the rough idle manifested itself.
Hope this helps as we do seem to have a similar problem.

Hi guys

Am currently thinking about replacing my daily driver (e36 ´97 M3 Lim) with the 320si. Have heard similar problem stories though as well as some replacement engines.

Altghough I´ve searched high and low I can´t seem to find any good forums other that this one with 320si info.

So can I please as Mr. Monty's Si, which forum he is referring to here:

Sorry Giz, the other site will offer no help with the Beemer as its a Porsche Club Forum. Now if you really want to read about tales of woe .........

I will say I've owned many a fine motor all have plus points but also the negative points (Audi rubber discs on the A6 allroad comes to mind, Porsche rear main seals leaking) if the Si is throwing up problems then most have about 2 years left to run on the warranty so by using this forum we should be able to air/discuss our issues and "help" BMW rectify faults like the poor idling, cam belt timing, possible engine loom problems, rusting disc brake housings, etc.
I think if you test drive an si and the idle is ok, you'll appreciate what BMW have put into this car, superb handling and braking and an engine that will go on and on before having to change gear.

'scuse my ignorance, but I didn't know there was a 320si model, is that an E90 or E91? It's not on bmw.co.uk. Could someone be kind enough to explain?. Thanks.

Hi Peter,
Only had my 320si for a couple of weeks, I originally went shopping for an E90 320d but 2nd hand prices were too close to new, I then found an E90 si at a good price and not having heard about or seen one did some digging before I went on the test drive.
Basically and happy to be corrected if I'm wrong, in order for BMW to go touring car racing and have some beefed up bits from the standard fare in the E90 they have to produce so many cars with those racey bits (2600 worldwide just 500 came to UK) to sell to the public, In this case they also used the limited edition model only available for a short period in 2006 to celebrate winning the 2005 WTCC with Andy Prioux (excuse spelling) most of the UK car mag. road tests on the si model stated that the UK allocation was sold out before delivery had begun. There does seem to be a few going through the hands of the BMW dealers at the moment including one in Preston that has the full compliment of racing decals and a BTCC race spoiler. What got me hooked was the precise handling (if you search for 5th gear VBH 320si test drive there is a short footage of its handling ability), although much is said about the hand built engine in the si with 23 bhp over standard 320i this is not a high performance car with the 325i leaving it behind. But the handling and braking ... well its more akin to a Porsche and thats from experience.

Hope that provides a very short explanation of the si.

Been busy with work so not been able to read the forum for last few days.

Hi Monty - at last there is another 320si owner on this forum.
I've had mine since Sept 06 had a few problems.

1. Rattle in dash/door frame (solved by dealer)

2. Foreign object attacking the car on the motorway (not BMWs fault)

3. Rust on brake discs (affects all E90's with big alloys)
Squeaky door mirror (Solved by dealer)

Its been in the garage about three times and once for its first oil service.

I'd class most of them as minor but the engine one has peeved me off a bit.
As it seems a bit sluggish at the moment.

The car goes to BMW tomorrow for two days to carry out the work they think it needs.

I'm sure they may comment on the mileage - its 24.5k at the moment got anothe 7k before spark plugs need changing (probably in next two months).

As mines a company car i'm going to make sure the lease company get it sorted. I absolutely love the car - its my first ever company car.

I've had it going round roundabouts at full whack and it just amazes me how it sounds and holds on for its life!!

I've taken it on the autobahn to 140mph (fully laden) and all I can say its sounds awesome above 100mph - take it to Germany and try its well worth it.

Thanks for the info on the si. So it is a homolagtion 'special' for the BTCC cars? Any chance of seeing a picture or two?
