Looking to sell my Alpine white on black 2010 BMW 335I. Car is located in Los Angeles, CA Car has never been chipped, and is very clean. I purchased the car new from Center BMW in Sherman Oaks. You can buy/purchase a leased vehicle at any point through out any lease. All one has to do is get a pay off quote from their bank which is also the residual amount that is owed to the bank. It is very simple and I'm surprised you others are not aware of this.

You may not be aware that you have to pay sales tax on the residual to buy it out. At least that is how it works in NJ. Even if I plan on selling it 1 second later, I have to pay sales tax on residual - really big pain in the #!@.

I will not have to pay sales tax on the vehicle, the person purchasing the vehicle from me will. I will not purchase the vehicle from BMW NA then "resell" it to another individual. Once someone wants to purchase the vehicle they will pay off the note from BMW NA and pay tax on the purchase price. Very simple

I don't think it works that way in any state. BMWFS can not sell a car to anyone other than the current lessee. The question on the sales tax is how much you pay in the lease.
In NJ, you only pay sales tax on the lease payments, which is why the residual is taxed at the buy-out option. In other states, you are charged sales tax on full purchase price of car, which then permits the buy-out option to be excercised without incurring sales tax. |

1. You pay tax on the full purchase price of the vehicle (well BMWFS does and of course they charge you). To IL, BMWFS is purchasing the car (which they are) and they want their tax. 2. To buy it out at the end of the lease OR ANYTIME DURING THE LEASE, you pay tax on the purchase/buy out price. Because now I am taking ownership of the car, IL treats it as a separate sale. So to lease a car here in IL for less than 3 years is crazy and to purchase it at the end is almost as bad.

Title will come in my name then I will sign over the title to the individual purchasing the car. That individual purchasing the car pays taxes on the car, not me.
