N54 - new turbos via BMW - New rattle on acceleration

Hi all,

Going a bit mad here, just got my 335i N54 2007 back from BMW, I had both turbos replaced via warranty, the car feels fantastic and sounds great the majority of time now however it has a new rattle which only happens between say 1.5k - 2.5k revs, it sounds like it's from the turbo area again and sounds like a tin can with a bunch of stone inside so very similar to the wastegate rattle I had before.

Any ideas? BMW are suggesting new cats but aren't sure, the head technician kept saying the N54 engine does lots of weird things to warm itself up so could be normal... but this happens hot or cold.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Update: BMW had the car in again, they thought it was the heatshield. It has now returned with the same rattle plus a new one on deceleration which can be recreated in neutral whilst parked up. They are arguing that is perfectly normal to rattle..

Have you checked your exhaust flap/vacuum actuator flap? I thought I was having wastegate rattle as well at one point; however, it ended up being the exhaust flap. The arm can get play in it, similar to the wastegates.

Funnily enough the car has had the exhaust flap rattle for a while now and is quite noticeably from the rear of the car, this rattle disappears when the actuator in the boot is unplugged so I'm assuming these issues are unrelated.

Gotcha, just worth the check as much cheaper fix!

Good luck and hope you get it figured out. They should fix it if it was just replaced.

+1
Just realized he said '07 335' as well...if and where did you get this warranty work done?! The warranty for turbos was 8 years/82k miles if I remember correctly.

I went with the BMW fully comprehensive warranty, cost me about 600.00 with a 250.00 excess.

Ah I see, I believe we were both thinking you meant the "extended warranty/recall" on the turbos that was only good for 8 years/82k miles. This makes sense now, well hopefully they cover it if it is indeed the wastegates.

Can I just ask what were the symptoms which resulted in BMW replacing the turbos?
Was the car chucking out loads of white smoke or something?

Just wondering as I have a 2006 335i on a fully comp BMW warranty so would love to get my turbos replaced if they go wrong and just wondering what symptoms to look out for.

I had the classic rattle which drove me mad and a bit of white smoke on idle, I said that it sounded like it was coming from the drivers side engine, that was enough for both turbos to be replaced.

Little update, BMW had it back in today, they apparently fixed it by sorting out the heat shield, they've told me it is working as it should..

Got the car back and shock horror there is still a rattle on acceleration, however as a bonus it now rattles in neutral when you take your foot off the gas which it didn't before today.

Joy.

Maybe it's time to find a different dealer?

Perhaps, I'm going to try and escalate it first as it's a bit mad that there master tech would acknowledge the rattle and tell me it's not right, then spend a day on it only to return it to me arguably worse.

If that fails then I will try another garage or maybe even an independent.
