this navigation system is a joke......
I swear to god, i have had it the BMWs shitty ass navigation system. the controls are great, but the saved data or stored data on the disc is just garbage/horse shit.
out of my last 5 destinations, 4 of them have NOT been in the system. and all these places that i have been to were easily found on my old pioneer unit that is sitting inside my closet right now. there is no way i just pick all the destinations that are not stored on the disk. these places have been around forever... and all this talk of having to pay for the upgrade at the BMW dealer AND keeping your car overnight....this is just wrong and unfair. vent=done. |

I too am dissapointed with the nav system. In this age not being able to search by name is just nuts. If it were a stand alone unit it wouldn't sell a single unit.
It's good if you know the address, but if you are trying to search for a nearby store it's useless, even if it's a major chain. The map disks do not seem to be that up to date either. I have just moved into a house that is about 18 months old and the street is not on the 2007 nav disk. |

I'd like to update as well but I heard if they don't think you need the upgrade you need to pay for it. So I guess if I bitch about the navi then that should get the upgrade for free. I would need a loaner though, since they need the car overnight.

I like to put them into the navi to see if it finds the location. If my 3 year old pioneer unit can find these and the BMWs can't, then something isn't right in my eyes.

Weird. I am not a huge fan of not being able to search by name (srsly lame), but I've yet to have it not find a location and I use it 2-3 times a day for work. I've probably input 1,000 locations already.

The Progman upgrade has absolutely NOTHING to do with the data that is on the nav DVD. That is researched and compled by Navteq who do it for many many GPS manufacturers and other companies like Google who use it in their maps. Do the places you cannot find appear on Google Maps? Sounds like you need a newer map DVD not a software upgrade.

i realize the info is on a disc, but i read that with the upgrade you can search by names and not have to go through the categories. also, i read that the menus were a bit quicker. sometimes mine pauses for 5-10 seconds, after i press a button or select a new menu, while it thinks. |

Even if we can't agree on whether the Navi unit is good, we should be able to agree it could never compete with the commercial brands. |

My Navi would freeze sporadically -- forever. Even if I turned off the car momentarily. It would only reset if I turned off the car for several minutes.
THe other thing I noticed was that my sat radio and/or nav went totally dead -- no sound and none of the buttons worked, etc. Again, not until I turned off car and restarted. In the latter case, they thought it may have been a lose wire. Dunno. |

I have used the navi for guidance only twice. Once to find a liquor store, then to see if my favorite sushi place was listed. It did find both locations, but it did take me a while to figure out which sub-menu to search under. It would be nice to just input the name regardless of catagory. But, my last navi was in a lexus. An awesome user friendly device, but one that cannot be utilized while driving. So, I am happier now.

On the other hand I love the I-drive.

The search by name is broken. My car was built in May, so it should have the latest Progman, and it does have the search by name. But it can't find places. You can find them by going through the category menus, but will not find them by name. I ran into the problem trying to find a WalMart.
On a rather funny note, if I tell it to find my BMW dealership, it directs me to their old location - they moved about a year ago.
