Manual Shifting

For all those manual drivers out there how do you rank your BMW in terms of smoothness and feel of the shiftier and clutch. The 335 BMW is my 6th different car I have drove as a manual and by far the best. Granted the closest in class I've come to the BMW is with a 1996 3000GT VR4 or a 2006 Evo MR the rest were mostly GM cars or trucks.

BMW 335i M sport manual versus cars I've actually owned,

Way worse - '08 Honda S2000 and '96 Acura Integra GSR

Slightly worse - '08 Audi RS4

Much better - '06 Infiniti G35

The BMW is my 3rd car with a manual. My second car is an RX-7 with a Corvette drivetrain (T56 transmission). I also had an Acura TL.

The BMW has by far the lightest clutch. It is pretty smooth but took a bit to get used to.

IMO the shifter is kind of notchy when compared to the Acura. CDV delete helped to make the shifting smoother but it just feels a bit hesitant in certain gears. Also, the throw is a bit long.

couldn't have said it better myself. once you get used to the cdv the car is as smooth as u want it to be but the 1-2 shift is a pain in the ass. 3-4 shift on the other hand is orgasmic

I liked my RX8 transmission way better. I need to CDV Delete someday.

B7 a4's transmission was like butter.
I feel like my e92 is a rock.
On the other hand, the Gt2 Porsche was like diamond against diamond.

The CDV delete helped immensely, but the clutch is still a bit light for me and the throws a bit long. Of course, I'm coming from a 2002 S2000, which had probably the greatest gearbox ever made.

Compared to my 1985 CJ-7 (Jeep) its a LOT notch-ier/more precise. Then again u dont need to use the clutch in the Jeep, and the gates are football fields apart

Worst I ever drove was a Honda Civic I couldn't tell when it was gear no feedback at all.
'02 Chevy Cav wasn't bad. I drove my friends Evo MR damn that think was like driving a semi truck tough clutch and clunky sifter.

Drove a lot of manual cars (mostly hondas) I would say my e92 is near the top. It feels pretty solid compared to other cars I've driven. So far, nothing beats the s2k in terms of shifting and transmission, that car has a solid tranny. The only gripe about the e92 I have is that the clutch pedal depresses a lot further than other cars.

Buy the 330i lever from tischer. Only 70 bucks and reduces the throw of the shifter. One of the best things I've done to my car.

My 2011 328 is not as notchy as the g37 I drove

A little worse than the 2006 911

Far far worse than the VWs and audis.

Especially the 1-2. Awful. But the car is still new so we will see

For almost 30 yrs, I've had modified Hondas & Acuras. This is my first BMW, and I haven't gotten around to doing the CDV yet, but stock, there is absolutely no comparison. Honda/Acura makes some of best in the business - super smooth and my last Acura had a much shorter throw - I really got spoiled However, I do appreciate the stiffer clutch feel of the BMW. I hope the CDV delete will give me a big improvement!

I think it's pretty good. I had a 1985 Mustang SVO that was a little nicer, but it's better than the Mitsubishi I had more recently. My only complaint is the flywheel being too heavy. Takes a long time to come down from 7000rpm when you push the clutch in.

Not the best, but not the worst by far. Of the cars I've owned, I'd rank my old 350Z and Integra GS-R better. My 335xi is close to my old Z, but the Z's clutch was more predictable. I'm sure once I swap out the CDV it'll be more responsive.
I've been privileged to drive a lot of different cars over the years, and of the bunch, the NSX and 997 Turbo have my favorite manual transmissions.

2010 Camaro SS/Stock shifter I felt was really sloppy and had a loooong throw to it. I put a Hurst in its place and it made a world of difference, Nice short throws, but not totally smooth.

Comparing to my BMW, ill have to say my M-Sport shifter is even better than the Hurst I had in the Camaro...
