Hardtop sensors?

I always wondered whether the car knew if there were any obstructions or items in the trunk that would prevent the a hard-top convertible's roof from going down. If so, how does it work? Please enlighten me.

There's that shell thing in the trunk that you can raise and lower. Once it's lowered, I think anything on top of it or on the sides is fair game for getting mangled. Never tried it myself, as I don't want to risk damaging the car. Also, there are stickers and labels telling you where NOT to put your crap prior to converting the car. I take that as a sign of BMW waiving any such liability.
