On the other hand, the dealer charges $8 (!!!) for one of those wires. Unbelievable.

Great DYI!
I have just a question: what thickness wire do i need for connecting all those? 0.75mm or what? I shall attempt this retrofit myself soon, just wanted to make sure i order the right things.

I just made my harness and it works like a charm. I have a 12/2006 build 335i and just installed m3 dct wheel and it shifts and D and DS. Thanks for the DIY.

Just a hint for those struggling to remove the slip ring harness:
The grey bit of the connector casing is kept still by a black notch at the direction of removal. Push the black notch toward the driver's seat's backrest, and then you'll be able to turn the grey lock aside and remove the connector. I spent a considerable amount of time trying to figure out how to do that, because it is not very easy to see clearly. |

I have an E90 LCI from 10/2010 and followed the DIY but paddles are not working.
I am using the LCI paddles and have bought the multifunction buttons for paddles (6 leads) so that I didnt have to modify the cables coming from the paddles. What am I missing??? Thanks. Regards, Leo Last edited by lingnoi; 11-09-2012 at 04:55 PM.. |

I did this 3 weeks ago on my E91 LCI with LCI paddles, followed the guide and was very surprised when it was not working. Felt like I had wasted a my money, but then I found these posts.

@BQ05: What did you actually have to do to get it to work?
I bought the correct MFB buttons (...073) for paddles so I thought I didnt have to modify the paddles. Which buttons are you using? I have read noth threads but it gets confusing with people with pre-LCI cars fitting LCI buttons. Regards, Leo |

In the LCI paddles there are two resistors in each, one resistor is 6k ohm and the other is 300 ohm in the -paddle and 1k ohm in the +paddle. You have to remove the resistors on the circuit board in the paddles, and short circuit the solder points for the lower resistance resistor in each paddle. You can see the resistors in the second link i posted, they are the small black squares with silver ends.

I have seen the pics of the paddles with the resistors removed but I thought this applies to pre-LCI cars only. I guess I was wrong...
How does Burgertuning offer a pnp solution? Does it only work with pre-LCI cars or how do they do LCI cars? Regards, Leo |

From what i have read it is not if the car is LCI or pre LCI, it is the paddles. I do not know for certain but i think that only the LCI paddles have resistors, while the DCT and SSG paddles do not.
I have not looked into bms plug and play kit, but perhaps they only offer it for DCT and SSG paddles. Or if they include instructions for modifying LCI paddles. |

I have now modified the paddles according to instructions (remove resistors and bridge the lower resistor but still no luck. Nothing works! This is frustrating after so much time spent...

Check the connections, use a multimeter. At the gear selector check the resistance when pressing on the paddles, measure between a ground point and each of the wires coming from the paddles to the gear selector harness. When pressing on the paddle and measuring on the correct wire there should be little (wire resistance) to no resistance, and when no paddle is pressed there should be infinite resistance.
There is one thing that I reacted on in this guide and the LCI paddles is that the 3-pin connector socket from each paddle is not connected like this guide suggests. Look at "installation part 1 - paddles to mfb", there are 2 wires coming from my LCI paddles that are connected to pin 1 and 3 but this DIY suggests that they should be connected to pin 2 and 3. I would think that this could be your problem depending on the production date of your multifunction buttons, but you could try moving one wire from the each paddle to pin 2 on the connector socket and test the paddles again. |

I have not done the manual wiring of the paddles to the buttons as I bought the paddle-ready buttons with the 6 wires going into the plug. Regards, L Last edited by lingnoi; 11-12-2012 at 01:11 PM.. |

@lingnoi
Yes but you connected the paddles to your "6 wire multifunc buttons" with a 3 pin socket that has two wires, which means that if one wire is in the wrong pin# the paddles will not work. This could be the problem as I noticed during my own install, that the LCI paddles did not use the same pin# as the SSG or DCT according to this DIY. To get your paddles to work you will need to measure the connections so you can see where the signal stops on the way from the paddles to the blue connectors in the shifter harness, otherwise this will be very difficult to get working. |

@BQ05
You, Sir, have made my week! My paddles are now working thanks to the great advice of BQ05. The wires from my paddles were in fact in the wrong pin locations so that no signal was transmitted through to the multifunction buttons and onto the transmission. And I had to desolder the resistors of course. I can shift in D and DS by the way. THANK YOU AGAIN. Regards, L |
