Took an Audi in for service and found out it needed carbon clean up in the intake manifold. First thing the service advisor asked was "do you use Costco gas?" My wife had been using it so we immediately switched to Shell V-Power. If it avoids another $600 service it's worth it. Costco gas for performance engines isn't a good idea.
Let me guess, 2.0T. Direct injection motor, known issue (N54 has same issue), nothing to do with gas and everything to do with bad design.

Costco doesn't charge the Huge price difference between 87 and 93 like the other stations do plus their rates are consistently cheaper. I typically save about 40 cents a gallon with Costco. At 24MPG and 12k miles a year that is $200 in savings.

Wrong... Bad idea... Costco gas has more additives and is part of toptiergas. Then again almost anyone can make it to be part of TopTierGas as long as they pay the fee to be listed.

All gas is from the same base fuels in your entire REGION, each reseller chooses how much ethanol to add and what additives they would like added to the base fuel.

Carbon build up has to do with the engineering of the motor/injector application. Thats why people put in things like Seafoam or MMO to the fuel now and again to clean things up. I have almost 100k miles using Costco gas and my car has been really good about the carbon build up. I did one cleaning early @ 45k miles and they said the intakes were like a car at 20k miles. The second time I did it was @ 95k miles and I was told it was only a light amount of build up and very easy to remove in comparison to others they had done (They only needed to do a couple passes of blasting to get it all clean).

Unless this stuff is 95 octane or something, I dont see the point other than to keep the marketing department employed, particularly if its going to cost more than "old" 93 octane. To this point, engines have survived the life of the car on gasoline, so long as they are properly maintained.

You needed the intake cleanout for the same reason that these cars do. Direct injection doesnt clean it out.
The VAG DI motors have the same carbon buildup issues as the BMW motors.

Not true. If you're claiming the same fuel is at each station, regardless of brand.

If you're wondering how I know this, it's because I've personally met Sam Trucker.

It's worth $200 a year to me to not have to deal with:

a) Finding a Costco when I need to fill up, because they are never in convenient locations.

b) The lines to get fuel (or anything else there!). Oh, the fucking lines! I lament going to Costco because my girlfriend and I buy like three things there regularly, we seldom even need a trolley, and there is just no way to get in and out of that place easily and quickly. Saving 20 minutes of my time is worth the $3 or whatever I'll spend getting my gas elsewhere.

c) Costco mixes their fuel additives on-site, and I put significantly more trust in Shell to do that correctly in a huge refinery with strict QC in place than I do in some minimum wage pump jockey.

A - ours are in good places. I usually go to the one by my work on my lunch break.

B - I typically never wait in line. When I do it is for a single vehicle. Pretty much happens as often as any other station.

C - I don't buy the hype. Never had an issue with Costco gas. And that $200 savings is my car only (and is probably more than that). Doesn't include regular for my truck, premium for the wife's car and premium for the boat. Ends up adding up to a lot of money. FYI - I've rarely ever went to a Shell, have had a number of vehicles over the years and never once had a bad fuel issue from anywhere.

I guess the moral of the story is YMMV. Everyone's situation is a bit different.

In Portland (I live downtown-ish) the Costco's are all on the outskirts or industrial areas. Closest one to me is 15-20 minutes assuming no traffic.

I'm surprised you don't run non-ethanol in your boat. I've heard that ethanol gas does a number on marine motors, but I suppose that's heavily dependent on the motor.

Motor in the boat is an Indmar LS1 (marine version of the LS1 in the C5 Vette).

E10 is a 100% non-issue in a trailered boat. Owners manual is cool with it too. Only time it could be an issue is a boat kept on the water that rarely gets used, so the same fuel sits for long periods of time. Even then it is questionable if it is a real issue.

I bought her off the original owner and it was kept on the water (on a covered lift). No marina on that water so it only saw E10, never had an issue.

Always use Shell V-Power in all of our BMW's and MINI. Purchased gas today and noticed it was the Nitro (listed at 93 Octane). Paid $3.07/gal, about a 0.60/gal premium over regular which seems to be the norm with most top brand gasoline's in our area. Two of our BMW's and our MINI Cooper S all have 100,000 plus miles on them, guess I will have to pay attention and see if we notice any difference in mileage.

Just went and filled up with the "new" gas. It was $4.05 per gal. 91 oct. The 89 Oct was 3.75 so I paid .30 more per gallon.
Ran a 0-60 test pulled 2 sec flat. 1/4 mile time was a low 9 sec. The nitro power seems to work well..more testing needed.

Looks like they're just replacing V-Power with Nitro+. The article makes it seem like there's a 4th tier of gasoline. It's still 3.

I think it says V-Power Nitro+ on the pump.

You can buy gift cards with cash in their store and then use them at the pump I believe
