If I press the trim below them hard, it stops. Stripped it out today, found the cable clip adrift. But something else is stick knocking in there...

FOUND the rattle!!!
Had a look today and if you open the door, look inbetween door and A pillar at the top of the wing edge where my thumb is in the pic below there is an M6 10mm headed bolt, it would 'appear' the nut on the other side of this bolt is loose, Im not sure it is as it feels secure, but if you tap the wing at the top edge with the palm of your hand you can get the wing to move/rattle and this IS what the noise i'm hearing is. I jammed a piece of cardboard on both front wings as the pass side actually started doing it recently too, drove home on private test track, and there was no rattle or noise whatesoever at 'speed' so definately that's what the problem on my car was. I'd imagine it's the same for most if not all E92's/E93/E90/E91's! Something isn't right with the fixing, I need to remove wheel arch liner which I will either do myself this weekend or take to BMW to do next week. So glad I found it, it's been doing my tit's in since I got the car! Quote:
I'm not sure this is a fix for the part i've described above as it would appear this PUMA measure is for fixings lower down on the wing, worth a look at both either way!

I've got a squeak that has developed lately from the centre console area on my E91, just infront of the ashtray, it only happens when the car is cold and it's doing my nut in, how hard is the alloy trim to remove?

Assuming you mean the trim surrounding the gearstick, the answer is "not very" if you know what you're doing.
I found it the hardest bit of trim to remove though because it was definitely the firmest held down bit. Make sure your remove the gears surround (with an auto this is easy, just pull the leather gaiter and get your fingers under it until the black plastic pops off - careful though, there are a couple of short cables linked to it, so don't attempt to pull it totally off). To conquer the trim, basically just a constant pulling up movement combined with wiggling is what works. If you have to use an implement, use a bread knife wrapped in sellotape. If you can get this dug under the trim enough, you should be able to twist the knife very carefully and try and get your fingers underneath. If you can't get the knife under a good 1cm, don't bother, because you'll snap the trim. Now you just have to keep working it loose by hand try and get your fingers under the trim and just slide your fingers along under it and other parts should pop off. Then when a bit of a gap opens up keep wiggling and pulling up+back and just use a bread knife (wrapped in sellotape so as to not scratch anything) to ease it off finally. If you have don't have iDrive it is apparently easier, because there is the tray to pull on. I had to use a bread knife get my trim off, but i snapped a tiny bit of trim off because i didn't get the knife under far enough before trying to lever. Popped the trim off today, piece of cake, refitted it and it seems to have cured the squeak.
No tools required and it literally took 5 minutes. Happy times |

right, managed to get a look at this today
i can't seem to replicate the rattle by moving the wing myself.. but then again, it does only occur when up around the 60-70mph mark i am assuming you wedge card board in between the wing and the car in order to see if that was the part rattling? i will give this a go tomorrow morning when i drive to gatwick i was half expecting to find a screw visibly loose.. something which upon a quick poke i could not shame you're in glasgow.. or i'd likely pop round |

I was told it could be this bolt making the noise on my E92 (07), its designed to allow the wing to expand slightly as the wing is plastic so in theory its a "floating" connection. I checked the bolt and mine seemed strong and tight. Checked the trim in the wheel arch and it seemed to move quite easily, squeezed and pushed it around a little and kaboom no more noise at speed. So bare in mind it may not be this bolt, check all around the wing and the wheel arches and you might find the issue. As a side note i was told the way to stop the bolt from rattling was to go in from the wheel arch side (so remove the trim) and add a rubber washer to the rear of the bolt as it still needs to have some flex so it shouldnt be tightend too much. I dont really know just passing on what i was told by others that had the issue.

I had the same rattle in my 2006/10 E92 325i. It turned out that is was something loose around the airbag inside the pillar.

Signed up especially to post on this thread!
I have the exact same issue with my car, 07 E92. Flappy, plastic tapping rattle coming from somewhere on the passenger side, which is wind related and only occurs above 60mph. Sometimes silences itself and then only occurs above 70,80 or even 90 (on private track) but always comes back eventually. I had originally thought it might be the under bonnet insulation or possibly the arch liner, but no dice. I will be checking this bolt/nut out and will report back! I have followed this thread and tried several fixes i.e. wing bolts etc. with no joy. Noise is approx 70 mph and passenger side engine compartment and could be worse the colder the temperature? When i had some time I investigated in the area I thought it came from and removed the air filter chamber housing and the only thing I came up with was a number of plastic conduits (electrical cable protection) in the area of the inlet manifold, around the area of the high pressure fuel pump. Applied a couple of cable ties to keep the conduits together and had an instant result, no noise. Have driven in numerous conditions and temperatures in the last month and the noise has gone. I originally put it down to technicians not putting everything back together correctly after high pressure fuel pump replacement. Hope this is help to others.
