My Summers took on snow Pretty Well - IMPRESSED

So today morning I saw a bunch of snow outside for the first time and since roads were totally empty I decided to take my car out on summer tires to see how they do. (Before everyone gets crazy, I have winter tires coming in, just thought I'd do an experiment to see how the summers perform in snowy conditions)

THE TIRES:
Barum Bravuris 2 225/40/18 - 255/35/18

To my surprise my tires had absolutely no problem taking on the snow at all. They spun a tiny bit to get upto speed, but it was no issue and the turning was just fine. Did some brake tests on an empty road and they did pretty decent. I was really surprised as I expected to do a lot worse and be flying all over the place.

A buddy of mine got stuck on stock RFT's so I decided to take my car to the exact same place to test it out and I didn't even get a traction light I just ripped right on through. I was very impressed by this since they were just summer tires, can't wait to get my winter tires on and see how they perform in snow.

I'm sitting on tirerack right now actually trying to make a last minute decision.

I want the dunlop 3d's but I also want to mount the winter tires on my OEM wheels so I can buy a new set of wheels for summer. Unfortunately, they don't come in the right sizes for my 18 inch wheels so I would have to get a set of 17" wheels from tirerack and I don't really like any of the wheels.

Option 2 is the blizzak WS series, this way I can mount them on my OEM wheels, but I've heard about them wearing pretty fast and I don't think a full on winter tire is really required for GTA winter driving.

I'm sitting here going back and forth between options, just waiting to pull the trigger.

I'm riding on rial salernos....great looking 17 inch wheel. I would recommend the dunlop 3Ds over the WS Blizzaks but I guess you'll have to sort out your rim decision first.

Barum is made by continental and sold primarily in Germany from what I'm told. They are highly recommended by something called ADAC over in Germany and were put onto my 335 to replace the RFT's.

If I go with the Dunlops I will be getting the salerno's most likely, do you have any pics of them mounted?

I hope you don't draw any premature conclusions from this entirely unscientific test, as if it's a home version of mythbusters. It's like saying, "I placed my hand on the stove while the gas burner was lit and set to 16,000 btus, but before anyone says anything, I had an assistant ready to turn it off and the burn center was on hold." It only took 4 min. for the paramedics to arrive at my house--IMPRESSED.

Not drawing any conclusions at all, just did it for some fun, thought I would go out and see for myself how it is to drive in snow on summer tires. I obviously am not going to do this again I just did it one time until my winter tires come in. First snowfall my 335 has seen and I thought I would go out and see how bad it really is on summers.

EDIT: And for those who think I'm crazy for doing it, I did it on a road that sees only one car a day..... my car

I'm not sure if you get the same Potenza summer ones that we do. But I had a very bad experience with them in snow. On the highway I couldn't go faster than 20, and the couldn't even get up the off ramp which was barely at an incline of a mere 10-15 degrees. It just spun out. It took me 30 minutes to get up the 1/4 mile ramp. Ordered winter setup right after.

18x8.5 Black Painted ASA GT4 on 225/40R18 Bridgestone Blizzak WS60 tires. No performance whatsoever. You have to be light on the gas or you'll just spin. They're ok for a Chicago winter.

Total came out to $1454 at Tire Rack with pick up at the Indiana Warehouse.

Yeah I seen your thread before. Do you feel that the ws-60 wear down reallly fast on dry pavement? I want to stick with 18's but I also really want the dunlop wintersports, I can't decide which way to go and it's the only reason I haven't ordered yet.

I suggest not getting the WS and go for the LM. They're horrible on dry/wet pavement I get nothing but wheelspin in WOT even if I gun it at like 70 on a nice straight dry stretch. The first 3 weeks it was nothing but dry/wet pavement but they look just like they did since day 1.

Read my comments on my thread about "WS-70" I was in the same boat as you late last night, and I pulled the trigger and went with the Dunlops. I know Gary said the 225/40/18 was sold out, but there's also an alternate 18' size you can you. Plug in all ur info on tirerack, and it'll give you the alternate size you can use.

If you don't get a huge amount of snow, I would go with the Dunlops 3D or the Bizzak LM's.

I am sorry but the Barum tires are complete and utter crap.

My father used to own the largest used tire shop in Bulgaria and I've spent quite some time around that shop. Barums were nothing but trouble. They crack very easily and the rubber deteriorates quickly with time.

Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3's are marvelous tires in the snow.

I've got Goodyear Ultragrips (German) and they were fine in 9" of snow. But I try to avoid snow because truth be told the car is too low, it's not going through 27" 4 snows or x-drive....

The oft cited ADAC test was for 195/65/15s where they were rated "acceptable" but basically got a "C"

No summer tire is safe in temps that would allow snow to stick.
