There was a fallen limb blocking the driveway gate that leads to the garage. In the time it would have taken us to move the limb we may have both been killed by softball-sized hail. Also, the hail went from marble-sized to grapefruit-sized in a matter of seconds, so the damage was already done by that point anyway. Believe me, I considered all options as quickly as I could, including running upstairs and pulling the mattresses off the beds, and paying my neighbors $1000 to let me use their garage. But alas, it was too late for any of this. I just had to stand on the porch and watch it happen.

jeez. you deserve to be fully reimbursed i mean there is no law stating you must own a garage space for your car otherwise its on you. i hope it all works and you get fixed and a fresh paint job etc.

Glad to see you you didn't get hurt by the hail. One of my friends also live in the munger area and her car got beat up, but not as bad as yours.
You're probably lucky that it got totaled out. My car got hit by the big storm that rolled through this spring and I still haven't gotten around to getting it fixed. Lowest quote I got was for approximately $7k. Insurance company cut me a check for $2,500. My biggest problem is that I don't have rental car coverage and don't feel like paying a ton of money to rent an aveo or something for two months while it's getting fixed. |

I keep hearing stories about people being screwed by their claims adjuster writing them tiny checks for repairs -- I always thought that if the repairs ended up costing more than the original assessment that they'd write you another check for the difference. At least that's what I've always been told by my insurance companies. Maybe I'm naive. Is that not how it works?

Sorry OP, hope you able to get a 335is or whatever it is you want, by the way is that a challenger in the driveway if it is that really sucks to lose a BMW and a challenger but don't worry you'll be blessed with something better.

I'm trying to prepare for both outcomes, although I do hope that they'll just total it out so I can start over. I have spoken to a few body shops and looked up pricing for OEM body panels. It looks like the cost to replace the body panels that were damaged would be around $7,500 (parts only) from BMW. According to more than one reputable body shop, as well as my own research, in order to total it I would have to have somewhere close to $20,000 in damages, so now I'm not so sure what's going to happen... My husband doesn't want his Challenger totaled, and it probably will not be. Body panels for those cars are surprisingly cheap, and he actually has an aftermarket hood for it in the garage right now that could be painted and installed, so he's going to use that as a bargaining chip with the adjuster in case they want to total it. His car didn't have as much damage as mine, but it's still not pretty Anyway, the whole thing sucks and I'm still really sad

I still say buy it back from insurance.
CF trunk, CF hood and get the roof repaired, rear windshield & front windshield. drive train and electronics are still good. hopefully the insurance will total it and if you decide to buy it give you a low $$ buyback number. ppp

Although if they total it and want to give me a decent amount on it, I don't think I would have a problem starting over with another 335. Probably an E92 this time. If they lowball me and won't budge, I'll buy it back in a heartbeat. I still need to look into the laws regarding salvage titles in TX though, to make sure it's even possible (I know in some states the car has to be more than 6 or 7 years old before they'll let you buy it back. Also my car still has a lien on it, so that may complicate things). Resale value doesn't bother me that much, as I was planning on keeping the car for a while anyway, so it would even out in the long run. The windshield(s) are getting replaced today so the car will be drivable in case I need to take it somewhere. I cleaned out the glass from the front and back seats and there is zero water damage. My tint actually saved the backseat; the whole windshield came out in one big piece since the tint was holding it together, and blocked most of the rain from entering the car.

Just in case anyone is wondering:
OEM back glass installed by Safelite: $805.74 plus tax :O Holy hell. The front windshield with rain sensor was only $430 or so with tax.

Free market, supply and demand. To be fair to Safelite, the $805 price tag for the back was due to the fact that they had no E90 back glass in stock (OEM or aftermarket), and would have to purchase one from a dealership. All dealerships in town are also out of stock, so they would have to have one shipped from another BMW dealership in another state. I just told them thanks, but no thanks, and I'll keep the sad contractor drop cloth on my back window until the adjuster comes out. I've actually been surprised with Safelite. Their customer service has been very prompt and responsive throughout this ordeal; better than my insurance carrier by orders of magnitude, which is sad. I have had four calls from Safelite over the past 2 days, verifying appointments, pricing, and offering assistance etc. I have heard exactly nothing from Allstate since my claim was filed.

Guess I'd better get started....should buff right out. And who needs a back windshield? Maybe I'll just cut the top off completely and make the first targa e90. ETA: There are all these mobile PDR tents set up around town. I thought about driving my car up to one of them and seeing the look on their face when they thought I was serious....Or driving it up to the brushless car wash and asking the annoying windshield crack inspectors to "work their magic at no cost to me."

This is terrible. at first i couldn't tell the extent of the damage, it has to be totaled, they would have to do extensive body work on almost every body panel, or replace them all. and mention the leather is probably ruined from the water that got in the car.

I'm still waiting on the adjuster but similar cars with similar damage in my area have not been written off, so we'll see.

The verdict is in:
The car was NOT TOTALED. I'm getting a check for around $9,000. This includes a new hood, roof, deck lid, glass, all the moulding panels between doors and roof, and the two driver side doors. The rest can supposedly be PDR'd. The adjuster said that the amount of damage didn't even touch 30% on their little scale for determining whether the car is totaled. I'm very surprised. Looks like I'll be without a car for a few months while it's in the shop.
