TBH - DB the pump priming adaption made FA difference to mine, the Workshop foreman who works on my car and I get on with very well, told me they have to go through the motions and try these adaptations on all cars, even though they know it makes any difference.

Mine needed a pump and injectors, which he knew when mine first went in, however he still had to fit the pump, then injectors on a second visit, they have to strike a balance with the amount of revisits the customer will tolerate

I don't want to raise it yet if there's no consistent evidence of any problem as I'll just end up in and out of the dealers like a yo yo.

As I don't know whether it is a failing pump or not yet, I'll just keep my eye on it for now.

No faults or coded logged as yet (whether it shows up anyway I don't know) checked via my new BT cable.

If it's taking time cranking, it will be the pump.

DB - I don't think codes appear. But you can log fuel pressure on your JB3, this will give a good indication of how healthy your HPFP is.

I can't remember which parameter this is on the interface - but if you go over to N54tech.com you can get the info there.

But it only seems to do it if I try to start it very early into the priming run.

I suppose a good pump would not need the priming run in theory, so this priming run is probably there to mask poor or early stage failing pumps?

This will be a real PITA, no way I can take all this time off work to piss about at the dealers. As I've been banned for 2 weeks 4.5 years ago they won't give me a courtesy car either, so that's another PITA.

Did you have the newest pump fitted? i.e. post 12/09 (item 1 ending 953 below)

Mine only did it on cold starts.

I just took a preemptive course of action with my car and had the fuel pump replaced (with the latest 933 part number) along with all six ignition coils to the latest spec.

Whilst the pump was being replaced, the inlet manifold was taken off so the back of the inlet valves could be inspected - very clean thankfully with minimal carbon buildup, which is great news given it's now done 50,000 fairly vigorous miles.

Will see how the head and block are doing when the engine is taken apart for a rebuild in two or three weeks time, but so far so good

Mine should already have the latest spec injectors (post 12/08) but not the latest HPFP.

Tony - I would love to preempt the failure, but I don't think a dealer will be so kind under warranty.

I wouldn't bet on it, mines a 12/08 build and had old design injectors on it, which have had two design changes from then until present.

I think thats exactly what it is, having seen all the global posts and now having had it done myself.

The pump I have seen in pieces.
Its like a hydraulic piston pump, a few axial pistons with a swash plate.
If they wear even by hiundreds of microns then they probably dry start from loss of prime.
Contaminents of strange additives in the fuel are not something you would wish for either.

So, IMO only, lots of stop/starts especially with a gap between them is about as bad as it gets for a pump like this.
Of course, once its already worn, theres no going back and wear will acelerate rapidly.
The software should have been a recall, it might have saved a few pump lives

As an Engineer, one has to think that ethanol and water in fuel are not a great combination with high precision pumps like this.

Mines a 03/09 build, and there's only been 1 new injector part number available since 12/08, so yours being a 12/08 build, it could have gone either way I suppose?

Anyway, if it's a gonna its under warranty.

Please don't rely on Realoem for updated part numbers. Their data is only good for February 2009. For instance the latest fuel pump was only released in June 2010 and the part number ends in number 933.

There have been numerous iterations of coils and injectors this year as well

Hi Mike,

If your car wasn't doing this before then there is a problem! My 335i was built around the same time as yours and i started experiencing problems with longer than usual cranks shortly before i sold it........i took it in to the delearship and they kept it in overnight and tested it in the morning...........no codes but they said this was a known problem with the car and as a 'safety measure' they would change the fuel pump and they also changed another pump as well (not sure what it was as my german is not that good)
Don't mess around with the dealer - tell them the car has only just started doing this and it is a known fault with the n54 (they will know this anyway) - tell them you want it replaced as if the car's pump decides to 'die' on the motorway at 70 mph this could be extremely dangerous etc etc - if you push them they will change the pump without any codes i guarantee it - at the end of the day this is a safety issue - i realise you are not 100% sure if it is the HPFP but i will be shocked if it isn't. I realise the hastle of the courtesy car and work etc but that at least you can arrange a date of your choosing for the car to get the work done as opposed to having the car break down god knows where or when.....get them to fit a new pump.

Hi mate,

Yep you're right. Better to get it fixed than have it break down somewhere.

I'm carefully keeping an ear on the cranking times, but like you said the fact its changed seems to point to a problem.

Which dealership did you talk to, I've complained to my local in gatwick and the warranty guy has never heard of the hpfp failing in the several years of his experience. I have no codes and the car does everything mentioned regarding a hpfp failing. In america they have a 120,000k warranty on this part but it doesn't extend to the uk apparently according the BMW gatwick.
Any ideas
