Computer help

When turning off my HP computer earlier, it did 15 updates then turned itself off. When I turned it back on, it had a black screen with a load of White writing, scrolling away. Then did nothing. Now I turn it on you can hear it doing things but the screen is blank.

Any ideas how to reset it??

The fact that the screen is blank is a very bad sign. (Unless you have accidently pulled the monitor lead out or is it a laptop)

Does no writing at all appear when you restart it?

Have you tried holding the power button down for 10 seconds to make sure that it does a proper restart rather than just going into standby?

You could try inserting your Windows CD into the CD drive to see if it tries to boot from it.

as you restart - keep tapping F8 and try to force a SAFE MODE start. hopefully you can start in safe mode and then roll back to a previous state.

Sounds like Windows has either corrupted a key file as part of its updates and the white text was trying to tell you what was corrupt/not working.

It might have just been the disk needing a scan running on it and the text was it just running, you've interputed this and now it refuses to go any further.

Try and boot the PC and keep pressing F8 every 1 second. If you can get to a menu that allows safe mode then select that and try and run a scandisk as soon as its booted up.

However the fact your saying the screens gone blank and nothing is displayed is pretty bad, even the bios should load if your disk is corrupt. Might be time to take the case off and start unplugging components in the PC until it eventually gives you something(you won't get much but at least bios screen), then get that part replaced.

If you PC is making beeping noises when it boots then try and find on the internet for your PC what these beeps translate into. think 3 beeps is memory fault, 7 beeps is motherboard/CPU 1 or 2 beeps no display adapter. Thats a rough estimate not definitive.

Good Luck

switch it on normally, then press and hold the power button for 5secs or more. This will reset the power management. Then power it on normally and see if it goes back to the white writing?

Does it give any different beeps to normal?

Did the scrolling text look like this?

If so, that was it booting in safe mode. I'd be reaching for a rescue disk with Recovery Console or similar on if it did and then never booted again.

Make sure there is no external harddrive on memory device plugged in as that can sometime cause it not to boot afyter update.

+1

MOST of these problems are caused by people leaving USB memory sticks plugged in and the BIOS being configured to boot form them.

Then again, it's not the first time I've seen windows update hose a machine!

Graphics card seated correctly? Does the fan on it spin?
Does it display the post/bios before going black?

Presuming you have a desktop with graphics card.

You may have installed some new graphics drivers and the resolution may be wrong for your monitor. As already asked - does safe mode work?

Edit - laptop - ignore top bit.
