They sure could, if you went to non run flats. They are alot lighter.

well they say you get more mpg as you break the car in. but then again you say you only have 4800 miles and put on new tires 500 miles ago, so you burnt through the run flats in 4300 miles? are you sure those tires were inflated?

I notice roughly 10% differences in mpg between different tires.
The fatter tires the more gas is wasted...or spent happily due to the added grip however you want to look at it.

Pressure also matters. Old tires could had drop, in time (few months), from 2.5 to 2.0 bar, progressively. New tires are pumped up to 2.5 and that gives your significant gain in mpg.

Also depends on the rubber. Some have a lot less rolling resistance. Usually the less rolling resistnace, worse grip though.
