335i with Dinan

Hi, I'm new to BMW and Bimmerpost. I don't post much but I can't seem to find a solution in any of my searches so here I am.

I bought a 335i a while back and my CPO just expired. As much as I enjoy driving it already, I'm ready to start modifying. When I bought my 335i, the previous owner had Dinan Stage 2 already installed. As much as it does provide me with an extra oomph of power, I'm looking to really play with my car a little more (I did all of my own modifying with my 04 STi and really miss having that aspect with my vehicle. I had her up to 400 hp and 425 ft-lbs of torque, weight down to 3080lbs, and a load of suspension mods. I did all of the modifications myself with the exception of a professional tune.) Anyway, here's my questions regarding the Dinan tune.

1. I've heard and read many mods that include DCI, meth, HF DP's, FMIC's and of course aftermarket tuners (especially JB4.) By keeping Dinan, I can't do many of these mods (without the proper tune besides the FMIC and oil cooler for stage 3 dinan) so should I just have the dinan removed and go aftermarket?

2. If not and keep the Dinan, then I can go stage 3, which the tune itself isn't very expensive going from stage 2 to stage 3, yet the price for parts directly from Dinan for stage 3 are completely outrageous!! Would dinan approve a stage 3 tune with other aftermarket components, or do you have to purchase dinan only parts for their tune?

That's about my biggest question regarding my first ever BMW. I understand now why they call it the ultimate driving machine. As much as I miss the RAW power of my STi, the balance of comfort, power and handling is amazing. Not to mention the misses looks forward to riding in it. Thanks for any help, it's greatly appreciated.

The purpose of having the Dinan tune is to keep your warranty and have peace of mind. You are out of warranty so it does not favor you in anyway.

My recommendation is to get the Cobb AP. It has pretuned maps to run with your car as your progressively build it with mods

After being fully moded ie FBO = FMIC, Intake, Downpipes.... if you want more power then you can go with Cobb PROtune by PTF which are custom performance MAP's made exclusively for your build

You will want to have the car flashed back to stock though to remove all traces of the Dinan tune to start fresh.

Btw Stage 3 only increases boost by 0.5 PSI, you will be much happier with the Cobb AP especially with the back ground experience in mention in building a car in performance

Thanks for the quick response, its got very good information.

I had Cobb originally on my Legacy GT (stage 2) and then my STi (stage 2 as well) before I went into heavy modifications and removed my Cobb altogether and dived into pro tuning. So my personal experience is that I like Cobb very much.

I just have one question; to remove the Dinan, do I have to go to Dinan to have them wipe their tuning?

Some Dinan shops can flash you back, but all BMW service departments can.

I have a Dinan tune on my car and honestly I wish I went with a JB4 instead. The smaller power gains and massive price just don't pay out for what a JB4 or Procede will do for the car. I emailed BMS about running a JB4 with Dinan software already on the car and they said it's fine.

Yeah, if you are out of warranty and you want to go full bolt on, an upgrade to a Dinan S3 will do you no good. A Stage 3 w/ prerequisite hardware does add some performance over the stage2 but is more about longevity concerns than hitting extreme performance levels.

Based on your posting, either a JB4 with meth, $1500, or $900 for a Cobb AP would be what you are looking for. If it were me, start with the JB4/meth and see what you think!

I originally had Dinan it does not even compare. I am running Cobb With an E85 pro tune from PTF. Night and day difference.

Just switching over to Cobb when it was first released with it conservative off the shelve map was like night and day from my Dinan tune.

For a reference of what I am talking about in performance i pull low 12.0's high 11's int the 1/4 mile, with my current setup.

Any shop with an Autologic and BMW support can flash you back to stock before installing the AP. Search your local area for BMW specialty shops. The Autologic is the gold-standard for independent BMW diagnostics and programmings, and any shop that says they're BMW specialists will have it. Much easier and cheaper than going to the dealer, since they'll harass you for all kinds of other things from updating other modules to 'trade this car in and look at our new or CPO cars'.

Thanks guys. This gives me so much direction. I will look it up and get my dinan tune removed. I've heard very good things with JB4, especially with meth injection. My buddy's got meth injection on his 87 Grand National and he was able to to go from 18lbs boost on 93 octane to 24lbs boost on 89 octane with no indication of knock. Pretty impressive numbers even on old school technology. My history with Cobb has a big draw, Cobb never gave me any issues......hmmmmmmm.

Contact BMS, you shouldn't have to remove Dinan tune if you go JB4.

I use to live close to a guy that had "vett eater" on his Grand National licence plates here in NoVA. Often wondered if it was just BS, till he took me for a ride! The thing couldn't handle for shit but at a stop light on to a straight away, OMG!

Sorry for the bagging my first thread. Took my gf to a bday trip and proposed the last few days. Had limited access to Internet. Anyway, if I could keep dinan and go with jb4, that's be good too. Like you're saying, keeping it for resale would be awesome, even if I plan on keeping her for a while (not a huge fan of the F30 appearance even if its slowly growing on me.) Who is Terry? Does he work for BMS? Ill try contacting BMS and find out today.

I've heard good things about GN's in a straight line but when I raced him with my 04 STi, I blew him off the line and stayed 4 car lengths ahead the entire 1/2 mile race. I was kind of disappointed. He said I cheated, it's not fair that I have an AWD launch. Then I beat him with a 50 mph rolling start. I had my brother race him in his EVO (my brother and I modified) in a rolling start at 50 mph and my brother beat him, too. I still have respect for a GN, they can be very powerful and for what they did, they were way ahead of their time. It's a shame GM dumped that technology because they were sitting on the future.

BMW dealer will charge you flash back to stock software, but if you ever need to bring your car in for a recall or warranty work they usually flash with latest DME update which will erase your Dinan flash. This is why Dinan offers free lifetime reflash at any of their authorized distributors, the flash is connected to your VIN. Jb4 can work seamless with Dinan so yes contact via email Terry/BMS.
