Of course the sound doesn't happen at the dealership. Is there anything that should be done or said at the dealer to get them to look into it further? Or do you really need to have the dash light and constant rattle to get the service? I'm taking it in tomorrow for that and a couple other things.
I had bad wastegate rattle off throttle between 1-3k RPMs.. nothing at startup. Are you sure its not the exhaust valve? That can do a rattle on startup when it closes for just a moment after it gets old.. I disconnected the plug int he trunk it to disable the valve, no startup exhaust valve rattle.

Exhaust flap has been disconnected since 5 minutes after I rolled the car off the dealer lot.

Has anybody taken their car to a BMW shop to get the warranty work done and been denied?

My car makes the loud clanking noise upon startup and does so each time you press the accelerator when out of gear (for the first 3 to 4 minutes after starting the vehicle).

I've gotten the engine malfunction reduced power warning somewhere between 60-100 times over the last 12 months.

The dealership service advisor tells me that they need to take apart the turbos and examine the wastegates before they know whether the issue will be covered by the warranty.

To do this, he says that the job will take 21 hours ($3045 pretax worth of labor) just to see if it will be covered by the warranty.

If it's not, then I have spent $3000 and gotten absolutely no where. If so, then I owe nothing and they replace the faulty parts under warranty.

Is this a chance worth taking?

If i was you.. I would say screw it and buy my own aftermarket turbo's for probably less then what they are trying to charge you...But that does'nt make since to charge you to disassemble a part to see if it's broke. If you are covered under warranty then that taken aprat crap is on them.. Call BMWNA and get some clarification on that.

I just filed a complaint with BMWNA.

Surely there is a way to tell if this is (can be) a warranty claim without 21 hours worth of labor charges.

It took my dealership all of 15 minutes to decide the clanging on startup and decel was my turbos and replaced them both under warranty.

Another dealer?

That dealership is the only one in my area.

Next closest one is about 100 miles away.

I guess it would be worth a phone call to their service department.

This is exactly what my car sounds like.

Why do they need to do 21 hours worth of diagnostic work to see if that is covered under the wastegate warranty???

When I took my car in, my SA just heard me pull in and he knew I was there for the turbo replacement then... no test drive needed.

after letting it sit there for a week, they have finally officially decided that they will not do any further work on the wastegates/turbos until I consent to the idea of them potentially taking apart my turbos, putting them back together, fixing nothing, and charging me $3,326 to drive my car away exactly as it was when I brought it in.

That's bullshit. I'd try a different dealership.

Are we only supposed to hear it at start-up? Car is at 64K with no previous issues and the acceleration is still there. I hear a little rattle at start-up but not after. I also hear what I believe I think is the flap in first gear after letting go of the gas sometimes as the car is warming up but it could be a rattle. I don't hear a rattle in Neutral after several revs and holding a 3-4K rev. Any advice? Is there a way to tell besides the rattle? Glad we have our cars covered until 82K

My 335i Coupe needs both turbos replaced. I have no engine power and acceleration. Whenever I go over 3k RPM, I have no acceleration with the turbos not working and there is a half yellow engine light that comes on. I was wondering if this is a sympton people have been getting for the warranty extension to cover my turbo replacement?

Im sure this has been answered at some point during this 21 page post but I'm way too lazy to read 21 pages:

Does this warranty cover wastegate rattle? If yes, those of you who have, was it difficult to convince your dealership?

Wrong. I had my HPFP AND all six fuel injectors replaced at once a few months back. (Thank god for warranty).

It really all depends on the dealership. The first one I went to denied me due to the rattle "being within parameters." The second dealership I brought it to heard the rattle from outside the service center. Kindly spoke to the SA and he knew immediately why I was there and explained that yes it's still in the warranty range, so he will do his best to see what he can do about it. 4 days later I'm rattle free with two brand new turbos, and even the battery cable recall which I didn't even know about.

If you're wondering which dealership I went to (Tri-State NY) -
the one that denied me was Hassel BMW,
the one that did the work and was awesome about it was Habberstad BMW.

Warranty Experience about to begin.

We bought our 2007 BMW 335i back in January from Bert Smith BMW in Saint Petersburg.

I do recall hearing the rattle at start up during the test drive but didn't think anything of it.

Today being April 1st, it was about a month ago or so that we began getting service engine lights and the limp mode warning on the engine and seemed like the power went away too.

We also noticed the rattle and like everyone else narrowed it down to the turbos/wastegate.

After much searching, we of course ran across the extended warranty last week and thought I would just give Bert Smith a call and ask if it pertained to us.

Sure enough, the service manager said it did and it would cost $132 for a diagnostic to determine if the noise is in fact coming from the wastegate. If it is determined that it is the wastegate, then no charge at all and it will all be taken care of.

Well, our appointment is tomorrow, April 2nd, and they even have a courtesy car ready for my wife when she drops off her car.

I'll keep everyone informed of the outcome. Crossing our fingers cause we don't like this car as much as we use to because the noise it embarrassing and not was you would expect from a BMW... Especially a 335i.

Thanks

You are screwed on that since the lawsuit was specific to N54. This only applies for MY2007 to 2010 N54.

I don't know that you all are getting screwed per say. I haven't heard of the new N55 engine having turbo issues. The N55 is a newer engine than the N54 and should have had most of N54's kinds worked out. If you are having troubles, your cars should be young enough to utilize that warranty.
