K&N or BMC Drop In?

Which filter is better for the 335? I have a K&N now in my 550i, but I hear some good things about BMC as well. Any comments would be appreciated! Thanks!

They both are good from what I heard, but really no comparison to a DCI or other intakes out there..

they are all a step above stock. K&N, or Helene are the most recognized drop ins.

think about adding MForce Design air scoops to make the best of stock box.

u must see: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=232099

let me know what u think.

Here's a link to (I believe) all of the filters available for the N54 engine. There may be a few that have been recently introduced that haven't made the list yet ............. this will give you a good head start though.

Would the Scoops and the Air Filter be a good combo?

A dual cone intake will give you the most power/sound, if either of those it what you are going after. I think the scoops/filter would be more stealth, but also more expensive for less power, assuming the car is going to be chipped.

On a stock car it probably doesn't matter either way.

from what i've seen here,(E90 Post) the dyno runs don't show an improvement for drop-ins, or scoops. but the concept of the scoops can never hurt to install w/ any intake, to include stock. and an upgraded life time filter will pay for itself in time. both of these will not cause any issues w/ ur dealer. some dealers SA's will not work on the car w/ some intake upgrades, until they are taken off. but those upgrades will improve performance some. so it's a trade off. you pick which way to go. I am sorry to say but I think the current dual cone intakes are not very turbo-friendly. When sucking hot air from the engine bay the compressors have to spin faster to produce the same boost, because cooler air is denser and warmer air is less dense. Also the ram effect of the stock intake help easing the pressure on turbos.

I have decided to buy a Helene drop-in filter, because I think that the current tuners did not try hard enough to make a proper cold air intake (save for the Gruppe M).

There is this thread which shows that Helene is a bit better than stock (+12hp max.):

http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=132028

There is another thread that shows that the single cone intake from BMS is better than all and Helene and K&N are no better than stock, but I have my reasons to believe that the particular thread is biased (that comparison was "helped" by a BMS top representative).

It would seem to me that the extra airflow available with dual cone filters would more than negate the density loss from the air not being as cool. Plus, whenever the car is moving there is air flowing through the engine bay and the stock ducting still provides fresh air to the filter area.

Yes, but even if it negates the density (in that there is enough airflow available to enter the turbos in order to reach the boost target), the turbo RPM MUST be higher in order to create the same boost as a cold air intake. So if you hear the turbos spinning faster...you know why

Does changing out the stock filter to others, increase engine sounds?

I made at least a dozen runs comparing the stock filter and my new K&N. I thought originally it helped, but then I put the stock filter back in, made some 1/4 mile runs, and then put in the K&N again just to double check. There was no improvement in the 1/4 mile with the K&N. I still have my new K&N filter in the box if anyone wants to buy it. Used only for a day or two.
