Oh but I do worry. What would happen if my missus found out I was wrong about something?
I'd not hear the end of it! EDIT: I should apologise for jumping the gun and implying that I'd been ripped off by the dealers. I am sorry for anything said or implied. I was obviously not ripped off and the service I received was clearly at a competitive price. Anneka, sorry if I offended you, that was not my intention! After all, a franchise must be buying 45gallon drums quite regularly. And I bet you are forgetting to factor in the cost of disposal of the old oil

I meant at Darren Wood. As you say they may not have the plush dealership and Internet access but they do have a bowl of Quality Street and BMW magazines and you can even watch them do the work which is what I like.

Maybe private owners like some of us, but the other 99.5% of private owners wouldn't even think of it.
The annoying bit is why the dealers charge you full retail price per litre (based on buying 1 litre bottles) when they buy freakin 55 gallon drums of the stuff. AND they always charge for 7 litres - not 6.5 saying "we only charge in whole litres sir" Ha! sorry mate, i thought you were being sarcastic about dealers!! |

Whole litres? Is that even legal? When I buy diesel or milk or beer they charge me for what I am given. If they charge you for the extra half litre then they should give it to you for a top up. When I had an audi they used to charge in litres but then started itemising the charge in half litres which I thought was a way of disguising the high cost per litre.

I rang a few places...
Sandal in Wakefield and JCT600 in Bradford didn't mind me taking my own oil. However, Stratstone of Harrogate and Scotthall (Leeds) say the don't allow it anymore. Will I need a 4ltr bottle of oil or more? |

I think it's about 7.5 litres that you need. Take 2x 4L bottles and you should be good. Make sure they leave the excess in the boot so you can use it for an interim top-up should you require it.

Ohh right. I was thinking I would only need 4L.
Based on the Sandal price I wouldn't save any money then. They quoted me £128 for oil + microfilters change with me providing the oil and £198 with them supplying it. The cheapest price I saw for the oil was £35 @ Halfords for 4L iirc. |

Double check that include the actual micro filter, its the cabin filter and is a separate service item. I suppose being a 2007 car yours does qualify for the 3 yr + discount.
7.5L oil applies to 335d. Being a 320i you only need 4.5L of oil for servicing. Last edited by flyfs6; 01-18-2011 at 06:14 PM.. |

Newer cars (2008 on?) have merged the microfilter change into the oil and oil filter change, so there is not a separate countdown for microfilter service on those cars.
I queried my LCI car when I noticed the idrive didn't list microfilter separately anymore, thats because you just change it with every oil change regardless. If you're using an Indy or other non BMW place for oil changes, make sure they are aware of this and don't just rely on the OBD info and do the oil on its own. (a decent Indy will know anyway) |

dougboy I agree with you. It's the post lci cars which don't list it seperately. I should have used a better choice of words, I meant to say its still charged for separately as well and wouldn't usually be included when you ask for the price of oil change.
Looking back at OP's post it looks like the price quoted does include it. |

Agreed. I mentioned that on an earlier post. Costs them considerably less for the quantities they buy. But then I guess there are in business to make money. However, some common sense should come into it and slightly more pragmatic approach too! |

£92 for a E93 M3 micro filter (this is a discounted price I think). Someone told me that the usual fitted price when combined with another service at Park Lane is circa £140 (was last year anyway). I think the reason behind minor items being expensive and billed standalone is that BMW at least have a policy of billing a minimum of 1 unit of labour which is roughly 15 minutes of labour. Yes it would be ideal if the customer was charged part only as it wouldn't take long to do especially if they're already having an oil change done anyway.
Talking to myself here on; but its nothing new and standard industry wide. I asked the VW dealer who was servicing the car for free as a goodwill, to replace an air filter whilst they were servicing the car and they billed me a considerable amount (something like £50 labour + <£15 for the part). I replaced it myself some days later with a Green Filter, so what a waste it was getting done by them. That air box would literally take 30 seconds to undo, replace filter and refit. I'd had brilliant service from there beforehand and they were the best/cheapest then too, I used to make a 75 mile round trip! Like some enthusiasts I'm happy taking my car apart and doing things myself, some things are really very simple, nice and easy. But most including other enthusiasts either don't have the resources or the inclination to things that are really simple and for that reason things may look a little difficult to them. I've wanted to change the standard air filter in the X5 for a high flow filter, we've owned the car for over a year and I still haven't got around to doing it because it seems like a complex job to me (when in reality it probably isn't). Obviously any reseller (not just a dealer) would like to make some profit in anything they resell, that's just how business is and the same. In this context the dealers/independents have margin in oil etc (some more than others), but I think what differentiates a decent dealer/independent is one who gives you a competitive price and allows you to, should you wish to supply your own oil etc. Or in our case, we have a higher margin in selling soup than something more exquisite. I'm going to see if I can provide my own oil for my next service too. Is there any reason why Castrol is more expensive than Mobil 1?
I can get 7 litres of Mobil 1 ESP 5W-30 Fully synthetic for £63.31, vs £78.83 for Castrol EDGE 5W-30 fully synthetic from Opie Oils. Also interested to see what BMW would charge for the equivalent! |
