BMW M8 Supercar Plans Firming Up?

And in the latest monthly episode of BMW halo / super car rumors, comes a rumor (from CAR) that plans for a 600HP M8 supercar may be firming up.

If the report is to be believed, the car is now referred to as the M8 internally at BMW and may see a launch in 2016 - to commemorate BMW's 100th anniversary.

The report goes on to claim that M division head Friedrich Nitschke has proposed that the M8 share the exotic carbon fiber/aluminum construction of the upcoming i8 hybrid sports car (which has a combined power output of 349bhp and 405lb ft of torque from its electric motor and 3 cylinder petrol engine, good for an estimated 4.6 sec 0-62mph).

For the M8, however, the 3 cylinder petrol engine would reportedly be replaced by a twin-turbocharged V8, producing around 600bhp. With such a power output and exotic lightweight construction, it could easily best its segment rivals, such as the Audi R8. Consider that the i8 donor car weighs 1480kg, compared to the Audi R8's 1560kg weight.

A production M8 would make it the first ever for BMW, although a prototype M8 (based on the 8 Series) was originally developed, but never saw production.

No specific source(s) was cited for this information. The image used above is an imaginative render only.

Why is the M1 Homage always illustrated when rumors of an M8 surface? I don't think an M8 would look anything like the M1 Homage, there's too much heritage in the M1 name to rename it an M8. If BMW wants to use the M1 Homage as the basis for an M8 for their 100th anniversary, they should consider naming it the M100, that way theres still the link to the M1 and you get to commemorate it with the 100th anniversary.

They need to build it, then race it against the Audi R8 and the Mercedes SLS in GT3.

I would just name it "M"

Low and sleek profile with a high revving turbo/hybrid system is a winning combo.

Make a smaller v10 turbo please. 100th year celebration icon should be special.

Does anyone else think this proposed supercar deserves a modern equivalent of the BMW S70 engine?

How many times have we read about this alleged M supercar??? I'll believe it when we actually get to see some testing mules driving around.

IF they ever build it, and judging by BMW's latest pricing strategy, it will probably cost $200K here in the US.

Sounds good!

They should do a V8 version with a tuned S63 tu (or modern equivalent at that point), and a V12 version based off the engine in the 760i (dont know the engine code).

I think it will be much more. i8 is rumored to be around $150-$200k so "M8" would be more.

But most importantly, past but recent quotes about future M1 successor (I guess "M8") from BMW sources say BMW thinks M has much rich history and won't be competing against 911, R8 or SLS.
M8 is going to be competitor to Ferrari Italia and McLaren MP4-12C and the car is going to be less available, more exotic.
We're looking at Lexus LFA type car at about $400k.

Haha, it is a decade we get monthly rumors of supercar coming. And why should BMW make a supercar for the 100th anniversary? They didn't do any M3 CSL for celebration 40 years M. A TC 4.4l V8 is crap for a supercar. It is neither this nor that. And mid-rear engine too is crap for a BMW. There is enough choice among the mid-rear engined cars.

I don't get these constant rumors of M supercar, unless M has been building the car for a decade already, like McLaren the MP4-12C and Lexus the LFA. If true this BMW supercar would blow everything out of the water, including all Porsches, the Lexus LFA, the Ferrari F70, the McLaren P1 and the Paganis. But I doubt.

It going to be funny how the BMW crew will say "it is not about power only" but will continue bashing the LFA and say it is overpriced.

A bespoke M supercar could be potentially fantastic. I think that's what the BMW lineup has been lacking most of all. However the twin turbo v8 part... Can't help but think they'll just slot in the m5 engine and call it a day. Personally I think a BMW supercar should have a monster N/A engine with a high redline, but that's just me. Either way, looking forward to actual development.

+1

But I think that "M100" would be a silly name.
