Apologies if this has already been discussed before, I tried to do a search and came up with too much that was not related. Here is my question:

Does the BMW Glass in the E90/E92 come with a mild tint? And more importantly, is it coated with a UV filter for UV-A and UV-B? My wife is not interested in adding a further tint but she wants to ensure that the kids have UV protection.

I wish the windows did somethig like the Mercedes S class. Its a really cool effect to see the windows become completely mirrored when the sun hits it, but goes clear when they drive under a bridge or ngiht....

Sorta like those eye glasses that hue dark when in the sun but turn back to clear when indoors.

Don't quote me, but I'm pretty sure all auto glass is UV repellant. I've never gotten sunburned with the windows up and I burn in like 5 seconds in the sun.

My girlfriend fell asleep while we were stuck in traffic (I was driving her 325) a couple years ago and she woke up with a wicked sunburn an hour or two later. I'm pretty confident that the glass isn't inherently UV-blocking

Not sure how accurate this is but my tinter told me that the front windshield is UV protected which is why we no longer see those cracked dashboards anymore.

All glass protects from UV-B light which is the major contributor to sunburns. On the other hand UV-A light penetrates glass unless it is specially treated. UV-A light will not burn the skin as readily as UV-B, but it is believed to be more dangerous in causing cancer.

Is this a stand-alone option on Mercedes? I guess it must be expensive or other car manufacturers would offer it. THat would be great to do away with sunshades and tinting. BTW, is the same true with the front windshield?

So, it seems that there is no authoritative information on this topic, except for anecdotal. I'm going to call BMW Canada directly to find out conclusively. Hopefully they know.

OK, here's what BMW Canada told me:

* The front windshield resists both UVA and UVB by 99.999%. Call it 100% block.

* The rest of the glass (sides, rear, sunroof), resist only 60% of both UVA and UVB.

Bummer, I get quite a bit of sun on my arms. Looks like I'm going to have to get a very mild tint for my Monaco Blue E90. My wife doesn't want a heavy tint, so we may go with 60-50%.
