I think this is pretty typical for these types of raidos...

Mine does it as well and is relate to the temperature outside...

Unfortunately, they are not the greatest radios and I fully expecto n having to replace it if I end up keeping my car for a long time and not trade it in on something newer in a year or two.

There are some places that repair these types of raidos, I know there is some guy on ebay out of florida that repairs BMW raidos specificly.

Checking on EBAY, it's a common issue for the LCD to punk out. There is a seller on there that refurbs the display, and will buy your old radio.

Those polarized glasses lick! Just got a new set of Bolle's and I didn't realized how many times I used to glance at the radio!

Same with my 06' just have to let the LCD warm up then it will be fine. For polarized glasses there is a DIY for fixing the issue. Search it on google.

My dealer is replacing my head unit Friday - they needed to get permission from BMWNA to do it, since it's only under CPO now and CPO doesn't cover it.

Hi all,

could those who suffer from the pixel heat fading check the function of the pixels in the radio service menu.

(radio off -> radio on, and push and keep "m" button pressed for approx 10 seconds; from +/- you can find display check, where you can switch the pixels on and off in checkerboard).

In my radio, which also suffers from the heat fading, the display check strangely works even if the display is otherwise faded!

I have the same problem, I guess it's just really that old but I tried what jip said and when I got to the Display Check I didn't know what I was doing.

There were numbers and if you pressed them the display would show checkerboard on 1 & 2, from 3 to 7 the display just keeps getting darker. I don't even know how to set or exit it after getting into that secret menu.

The idea was just to see if the pixels work without fading in the service mode.
Buttons 1 and 2 just change the checkerboard, and in my case all pixels work without fading in the service mode. I was expecting to see the fading problem also with the checkerboard...

You can exit from the service mode by switching off the radio.

Picked up my car from the dealer service department today and noticed when I got home that about 35% of the radio pixels were faded or completely out. Not coincidentally, this is the first hot (over 90 degrees) day that I have driven the car. So naturally I looked up this matter online. I already knew that the old E39 5-series had this problem.

Which brings me to my question. People in this thread and elsewhere make it clear that BMW has known about this issue for more than 15 years! WTF?! Why on earth hasn't it been addressed yet? Perhaps a different equipment supplier??

My car is still under factory warranty and has only 26K miles so I'm hoping it won't be too much of a struggle. But clearly it'll just have to be done again after the warranty has expired. Am I missing something?
