Morning Longer Crank Time?

These past two mornings, it has taken between 2-3 seconds of cranking before engine starting, anyone have any ideas on what could cause this?

It normally cranks and fires straight away. Before anyone asks, I always turn on the ignition and wait until all the lights go out before hitting the start button. I know the temperatures have dropped but I don't expect this to affect a BMW. It starts otherwise fine in the afternoon after work.

320i Petrol engine, 42k miles, 4 coil packs replaced last month.

Sounds exactly like that, but research shows it mainly affects the 335i engines, does the 320i engine have HPFP?

Had 4 coil packs replaced last month under recall, I'll take a video tomorrow morning so at least it's something I can show to BMW. Guess it's probably best I take it in for them to scan, no error lights on the dashboard, just hope it's something my BMW Warranty will cover.

I had same problem when the car had been standing overnight but ok when restarting etc I suspected the HPFP. When it went in they said the log showed a faulty NOx sensor, they also replaced the 6 coil packs as there was a recall on them that they hadn't contacted me about even thiugh I asked if there was anything required a couple of weeks ago.

Been ok since, will be back in if not as warranty exp in Dec.

Strangely it hasn't done it the past two mornings, seems like an intermittent problem.

I'll rule out the coil packs as they were changed last month. Interesting on the NOX sensor, will see what BMW says when they do a scan

Car back in for same problem.

They've now found a faulty injector & have also replaced the plug & coil pack (even though it had all 6 coil packs replaced a few weeks ago ) for that cylinder.

Has it solved the problem for you? Or too soon to conclude?

No as the car ius still in the workshop.

They kept it overnight having fitted the mew injector etc so they could try it from stone cold this morning & it's still the same. They are now replcing the HPFP which is what I told them I suspected it to be both times they've had it .

Will wait & see!

Video it and show them the video clip.

My dealers refused to believe my HPFP was failing as it passed their tests ok (anecdotal evidence doesn't count for warranty apparently!), until I showed them a phone video of the starting problem, then they changed it no problems using the video as proper evidence to BMW UK to get the claim approved.

I have been video recording each morning without any luck. This morning, I was late for work so didn't have a chance to video... sods law the 5 second crank occurred, unbelievable!

So BMW checked it today, computer couldn't find any faults and couldn't repeat the fault, so I will carry on video recording each morning.

EML light was down to an oxygen sensor so replaced FOC under warranty.

Just an update.

Since I had the O2 sensor replaced, I've not had the longer crank occur. Reading another post in the forum, the faulty O2 sensor may have caused the car to over-fuel and result in a longer crank as there's more unburnt fuel in the engine somewhere.
