Just get STs, equivalent to KW V1's. You'll be fine with them just clear coat the body every year and in the winter apply some marine grease on them. $900 is a great price for STs.

Why chance it on the used coilovers. KW coilover warranty is not transferrable, so you have no support if something goes wrong. At least with the ST coilovers, you will get brand new coilovers, which are the same as the KW-V1 (with different housing) with a 5 year warranty. Seems like a simple choice to me. |

I've heard mixed things about clear coating the shock body. My installer, which is also a great body/paint shop, mentioned that although he could, he thought clear coating the shock body was a waste of money. Reason being, the threads are what typically gets corroded and seized up and any time you turn the collar on the coils, you're going to scrape off the clear coat.
He suggested just applying grease, and from what I read, anti-corrosion aviation grease may be the best choice (ACF-50 is one product that comes to mind). In regards to untreated ST coilovers, I have a friend who has ran them for 2 years on his daily driver Golf R (in Chicagoland), and there isn't any corrosion on them. The collars rotate freely and they are in great shape. Also, keep in mind that it would take several years for the corrosion to eat through the galvanized shock body. In that amount of time, you would need to rebuild the used KW-V1 coils (if not soon already). This would set you back about $400/set plus shipping. |

I had them on my R56 no problem. And I haven't installed my STs yet still in the box. However I did the same method on my R56. One thing is as Wingnut mentioned, the threads are stainless steel on the ST's like the KW's.

It's a hard point to argue, because these have been tested to perform on the track as well. In most cases, I would say coilovers are superior, but they have been tested to be "similar."

I am selling my car and taking parts out in about two weeks. I have KW V1 coilovers if you are still looking to buy. I put them on in august and have only drove a maximum of 1500 miles on them. PM me if interested.
