Do I need to have a break-in-period for my new turbos? If not, I'll be down for some auto-xing this weekend :-)

Also... since you (oct1285) got the RR catch-can... what parts, exactly, does the RR catch-can keep oil from getting into? The FMIC? Oil usually doesn't go into the turbo's... can it? Should I get a RR catch-can to protect my new turbos?

I just re-read it... I did, but I didn't make it clear why I was asking... :-) It was mostly a random question for oct1285...

yeah there actually is suppose to be a break in period for the turbos me think. the auto-x is the perfect place to break them in. And make sure you have the dinan flash on your car after picking it up from the dealer.

The catch can protects oil from getting into your fmic and your intake tract. The turbos are oil cooled, so yeah oil does get into the turbos and minute amounts leak into the intake tract and over time that can be bad. Besides the catch can makes your engine bay look like you know what you're doing.

Haha yeah... I'm worried about the Dinan flash... when I first dropped off my car, I told the SA that it had the Dinan flash on there... and he asked me to spell "DINAN"... baaaaaaad sign... apparently he had only been working at the BMW dealership for a couple months... still pretty clueless, though.

I wonder what BMW would think about a catch-can... I don't think any reasonable tech would blame it for anything...

It's not all that great though, and if you have mods, I'd recommend you go somewhere else...

they were alright about my mods last time I went in for service. The SA was saying what we've all been saying, unless the mod caused the defect BMW can't void your warranty. When I went to make an appointment for service this Friday I made it a point to tell him I have more mods than I did last time. He said that be ok for service. Of course my SA did get moved to the mini side of the dealership so whoever I get this time might not be as understanding

Well, the problem I had was this: I took it in to get the wastegate rattling fixed... I printed out the bulletin released by BMW NA stating that this is a common problem on stock e9x's and showed it to them. They found out that I had the Dinan Flash and refused to touch my car...

Yes, the wastegates could possibly be related to the Dinan software (it's part of the same system)... but it was clearly documented by BMW NA that this is a problem with stock cars as well... but anyhow, they turned me down and I ended up taking it to a Dinan dealership.

I can understand where they are coming from... but I still think they COULD have helped a brother out knowing that this is also a problem in stock vehicles.

being that it wasn't a dinan dealership is prolly why they didn't touch it. They're not going to do any warranty work that has a mod related to it. Or at least that's the impression I get from them. As long as they service my car they're ok by me

I go to college in San An. There's a major car meet at Academy, 1604 and military, tonight. My friend says there's going to be over 200 cars, if he is correct. Not sure if you guys heard about it... I'm gonna check it out.

after two trips to BMW SA for service I've come to the conclusion they don't care about mods when it comes to service. My service advisor's exact words were "I don't care." But warranty work on the other hand is a different story. He basically told me that BMW will try to pin any defect the car has to a mod I did. So that's basically nothing new, but at least you can get your car serviced.
