Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power
Hey Guys,
Below is my original post, decided to post in the CA section, since other memebers were saying I should get a BT scan to find out whats wrong, so my question is anyone got one around Glendale/ Northridge area I was driving to work today going about 80mph, then pushed it to 120-130mph, then when I went back to about 70-80mph, I got "Engine Malfunction - Reduced Power" .... I drove about 3 miles at 60mph found a spot to park. Turned the car off for about 2 min, looked at the engine (everything seems fine) turn my car on and the message was gone..... I had another 3 blocks to work and the car feels stock now (have a Gintani tune).... I did a search on the forum and it seems like it could be a fuel pump issue, but the warning went away.... I don't think its possible that the car can flash it's self back to stock, or maybe I couldn't push it since it was only a 3 block drive, or am I just trippin? |

Are you using a blow off valve? I used to have this same issue very often on my E92.

Alright, I'll check back tomorrow morning and pm you some information on how you can check where the faults are coming from and/or what is causing it.

Had that happen to me, I was on the freeway and had engine malfunction. I kept driving and half engine light went on. I pulled over and let the car cool down for about 5 mins. started it up and nothing was wrong. Took it too my mechanic and asked a few people what I should do. Someone suggested redlining it just before I reach the dealer and it would make the fuel pump go out. Anyone try this? I ended up just calling my sa and told him what had happened and that I thought it was the fuel pump. Took it in and got it swapped. I think EZ-TUR90 has had this happen a couple times pm him.

your feels stock now? i don't have gintani so not sure how mapswitching goes, but your car should should be fine.
usually after you restart your car things should be back to normal and half engine light goes away. |

Sounds like vanos solenoid.
Had reduced power and light but went away then came back after another spirited run. They replaced mine.

By the way, after this happening repeatedly on my E92, I mastered the technique of restart without pulling over. While car is moving, place car into Neutral (N), gently press down on brake, press Start/Stop button two (2) times in a row, it will turn off car, press brake down a little more and Press Start/Stop Button one (1) time and it will start the car back up while still holding a decent speed. Avoids having to pull over each time the Engine Malfunction issue does arise. If you plan on a dealer visit, keep in mind any type of mod will risk your warranty so make sure you go mod free.
Hope this helps, the technique sounds a bit goofy but did me wonders for the longest time. Kindly, Jay Gill |

I had this same issue for a while. Would get the engine malfunction light, restart the engine, and the error would be gone. Took it to the dealer and they did the software update and new HPFP. I would still would get the engine malfunction error every so often so I took it back again. This time they changed the vanos solenoid since it was throwing an error code. Hopefully this time it is gone for good. Just got this done yesterday so I'll have to wait and see.

do u chip ur car? cos i had the same issue after i chipped my car for 2 months, it started very hard to start the engine and all of sudden my engine died in the middle of road. since that, the warning popped out about engine malfunction and reduced power. so i brought back to dealer and they said i had fuel pump problem. so they changed the pump and restarted the engine by using the chip.

Had an error pop up various times. This past weekend, I finally took out tune from my car and undid the solenoid bypass and when I went back to start it, no more limp mode. Car felt good as new. Don't know if it was a glitch with the chip, but don't want to place it back in.

it could be a number of problems... this happen to me, the only way to find out is to scan for fault codes... usually its the vanos solenoid, misfire in one or couple of the cylinders, hpfp, or injectors..
i took mine to dealer and they replaced everything...took couple trips to the dealer tho. |

It's your tune. The newest version of the Proceed autotune with the CANclear feature will not trip this light or a reduction in power. Supposedly the same can be said for the JB4 (not sure whether it's out yet).
