Question about rattling noise on start up

Every time I start my car I hear this sound like a tin can rattle. It goes away after about 30 second and it doesn't come back during acceleration.

This used to be on cold starts only but now its there even after 2 hours parked.

I had the HPFP changed a few months ago and I mentioned the rattle to BMW, I even left them the car overnight but they assured me it was normal, surely this rattle cannot be normal!

Isn't that wastegate? Sure someone with a 335i will comment!

Where is the noise?

The exhaust blanking flap on the NSR exhaust pipe can rattle a bit until it opens.

The noise sounds like its coming from under the middle to rear of the car.

I'm having the same problem after I cleaned my vanos solenoids. A rattling, rough idle, and engine check light, which all goes away after the engine has warmed a little (after a few mins of driving). Ordered replacement solenoids to see if that's the problem but worried it may be the vanos unit itself.

Classic wastegate rattle. BMW will tell you it is normal, it is only normal in the sense that all 335i's will develop it at some point. If you have a good warranty with BMW you can push them to change the turbos. The other options are to try the ECU rattle update, have the actuators fiddled by a specilist (like Birds) or get the turbos rebuilt for £££'s but none of these are guaranteed to work.

I had my turbos rebuilt twice. The rattle on start up is not there anymore but there is nome rattle during driving and revving but of course this is 'normal'

Not yet. Am planning to get a cable and software. Any recommended guides for which cable to buy and how to get INPA up and running on Windows 7?

Edit - Ignore above, have just ordered this one which comes with software and everything to work with Windows 7 64 bit. Hope it works as promised: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2811367162...84.m1439.l2649

don't worry about software you can download it for free. And almost all are ok this has an adapter between car years which is good.

you can check if that is WG rattle or something else. When you start the car unplug both turbo vacuum tanks if the noise will continue it's not WG's

This is exactly like mine but how can this be normal?

How can a car costing thousands make this rattling noise at start up and claim to be normal? its embarrassing

Sounds like wastegate.

Had my two turbos replaced in May, then last week it's started again

Booked back in for August.

If it's under warranty, they'll replace it.
