Odd BMW choose to use staggered setup on Xdrive

The more I drive my car, the more I am baffled by the fact that they choose to use a 225/255 combo on m sport package rather than staying with a square setup. They used a different setting on Xdrive for suspension, so why not a different the tire width? I opted for a 225/225 winter setup and it still understeers. My 225/255 summer have more grip, but understeers even more with the wider rear tires...if it is RWD then sure. but AWD with staggered is just...questionable

But it still understeers. I am tempting to put 235 or 245 in front and leave the rear at 225...225/225 square understeers so I don't see how 255/255 will be better

Are you referring to the outer circumference of the tires? I was not talking about that. I was referring to tire width. Fitting wider tires in the back will cause the rear to have more traction than the front, which will cause the car to understeer more. It is fine with cars that naturally oversteers, such as a RWD model. But on a xdrive, which naturally understeers a bit even with the default 40/60 power split, fitting wider tires in the rear is just asking for more understeering on an already understeering base. I fitted a squared setup for winter and it still understeers, so it does not make any more sense to fit wider rear than the front.

Wheel alignment will help. Aging shocks, suspension components, etc. can cause more understeer over time. Maybe time for shocks/springs, new bushings? I had a little understeer when I bought the car but I did a custom alignment and it fixed that. The car felt much more neutral and took corners faster. It even understeered a bit.

I didn't start getting understeer again until after my shocks started going. Stock shocks don't last very long. Shocks is the heart of your suspension.
