Increasing reliability of my N54
Not sure if this has been discussed but hopefully it will help those that are curious as well. The warranty on my e90 is pretty close to being up and once it up, i was wondering what type of mods or tasks i can do to increase the reliability as much as possible. Obviously the best way is to not mod it, but as many of you know, the mod bug's force is too strong especially for this jedi.
Some mods that i can think of at the moment are intercooler and bms oil catch can...anything else u guys can think of? |

Regular fluid changes.
Downpipes Intake and intercooler will all make the turbos work a lot easier and more efficiently. A proper tune and besides that, you should be prepared to change spark plugs and coils if misfires occur. N54 is pretty reliable besides a few misfires on old hardware. |

I think too many people are paranoid about their motors...
Just drive your car and if shit breaks deal with it. |

I am on my second e92. I have had absolutely no mechanical issues. I am sad though, my warranty doesn't expire until the end of 2013. And I am anxious to get mods now.

I bought this car to mod. If I had never seen the power gains from a simple tune, I would have got something else.
Don't put the pussy up on a pedestal. Give your car some balls already! |

The things I see that kill engines early is ignoring routine maintenance, beating on the car when the fluid levels are low, and skipping important details if you mod and work on your own car. I think it's already been shown that these cars are strong in most areas, so just upgrade the engine, trans and diff fluids as the power level goes up.

Skip the OCC... There is a reason that BMW did not add it to this engine... and that reason was not to safe 20 bucks of plastic.... my 2 cent..
Warm the engine up before beating.. Warm the engine up always ;-) Use only BMW approved fluids... Warm the engine up before beating Change the oils within reasonable intervals.... No modifications will increase the length of the engine life.... but modding does not have to mean that your engine will not keep up.... it's a strong engine with royal demands in terms of specific fluids and how to maintain it... but it returns you with a lot of love ;-)

Majority of us had a warranty at some point or another and still modded. None of the mods available cause a problem, and if your dealer is strict with mods just remove them before servicing. I had an intake and tune ready before I bought my car brand new. |

OCC makes perfect sense, protect your intake valves from getting clogged up. BMW didn't put it on b/c they knew it'd become a headache dealing with all the people that forget to empty it
OCC is proven to work, Big Tom uses it now in his (slightly modified the bracket to increase the occ's "oil catching" abilities) http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?p=11698699 |

A OCC keeps oil out of your CP,FMIC,intake valves, intercooler piping, turbo etc...why would you not want one....this thread is to help keep his car "reliable" not kill it as fast as possible lol!

ROFL.... tuned after 1000 km....
Informed my dealer after 10.000km... you play... you pay.... and my dealer really appreactiated the honesty.... And now we have the agreement in line with: Fuel pump broken -> They pay.. Turbo's gone -> I pay...

The thing is, the engine needs to be driven... so no 1 mile drives from home to office.. but full operational temps and medium to long drives.... The side effects of an OCC in relation to the vacuum is causing to my opinion to much side effects....
