240F-- normal oil temp for a E92 328i?
My oil temp guage would always point directly at 210F when warmed up; no more and no less. Lately, I got an exhaust installed and now notice that my oil temp guage rises to 240F when the car's fully warmed up. Is this normal? I get paranoid over little things like this.
Just want to get an idea of what other 328i owners are getting. Thanks.

don't worry. Remember, your E92 328 was only given an dash with an oil temp gauge because BMW had left overs . The E90 328/330 do not have them and they ahve the same or slightly more powerful engine.

Could it be that with the new exhaust the engine is running slightly lean and thus running hotter? Did you change just the muffler?

yeah, it's just axle-back. Does less backpressure cause the engine to run slightly lean? If so, is this something I should worry about?

np. all E92's have the oil temp guage, regardless of engine model. the e90 328's don't have it

wait, 250 is in the middle for you? so whats on the ends of the gauge? maybe they changed this for 09's, cause for me, the ends read 120 and 300, and right down the middle is 210.

2007.5 (3/07 on) they changed the middle to 250 so it brought the needle back to the middle (or close to it) for normal operating temp. What's annoying is the gauge takes forever to move in the winter since it starts higher.

I'm certain it's the engine oil temp gauge. I checked my manual just now. I guess I shouldn't be too worried if the newer models have 250 in the middle.

Not to add to your paranoia, but... It's not whether other 328's are at 240 or 210 but rather that YOUR oil temperature went up after an exhaust modification. Your original concern is a valid one. I would do some research into this, perhaps contact the exhaust manufacturer or speak to others who have used the same. While the engine management should compensate and keep the mixture on spec, other things may be going on with respect to back pressure. Does this exhaust have the two-stage exhaust like the original one does (where it opens the second pipe under computer control)? I worry about such things too. Why the change? Why the change? lol..exactly. All I need is something else to be OC over.
I remember when BMW went to a buffered water temp gauge on with the E46 because you BMW had all these people worried about temp fluctuations. Kinda like what you're seeing here. I'm honestly not surprised BMW didn't install a bufferred* oil gauge. There's nothing special about the E92 328 vs the E90 328/330. Oil temp gauge on the E92 328 is all about keep up with the "coupes are sporty" mantra. IMO..cooling system failures are sudden and catastrophic (blown hose, radiator, etc etc) so temp gauge is of no help. *buffered gauge: Needle reads in the middle although the actual temp is fluctuating between cool & overheat. |
