To add some more anecdotal evidence, I have the same exact tires in the same sizes. I have about 10k miles on mine and I have nowhere near the wear that the op does. I'm lowered and have had the car aligned recently. Also, I'm running about 35 psi in the rear.

Just ran across this thread. I have these tires on my ZHP. I have 235/40/18s all around. The exact same problem as the OP. Fronts look like new 20K miles later. The rear have the same characteristics on both sides. Worn what I would call a little prematurely AND have the same wear in the middle and not so much in the sides.
Given that the balance on these cars is 50/50 I would think the RWD is the major contributor into the mix. BTW my alignment is dead on the spec all around. I drive somewhat aggressively. What's odd to me is not the wear but the inconsistent wear

I don't love these tires.
I pulled mine off last week to stick the snows on. With 10k miles and a couple track days they are cooked. Not to mention noisy as hell. I have a set of half used up PSS that will go on next year.

I think the inflation level was too low. I run 40-42 in my rears and get great wear. Basically ignore the door sticker with the lower pressures and go for the 100+ mph pressures. The car will handle a lot better as well.

I managed 40k on my DWs with the fronts having tread remaining. I'm surprised by op's experience but there are many variables. In my case, highway miles, very smooth roads help me out. Think DW is a good tire.

I'm bringing back this old thread.
I too have a story regarding Continental DW tires. I had OEM Bridgestone Run Flat Potenza re050a tires on my car (UTQG rating 140). The Bridgestone Potenza rears lasted 39K miles (yes 39K) and the front could have gone much longer. I replaced the Bridgestones with non-run flat Continental DW tires (UTQG rating 340). One would think that the new Continentals with a 340 UTQG rating would last about 2.4 times the Bridgestones with their 140 UTQG rating right (340/140=2.4)? But no, at my current tread wear rate, I'm estimating I'll only get 18K miles out the Continentals or less than 1/2 of what I got on the Bridgestones. This is backwards! Note that I'm talking about Continental DW high performance summer tires and NOT the DWS the all season model. Given some of the comments here, has Continental done anything about this? And as I found out more recently, Consumer Reports reviewed the DW tires and ranked them only "Fair" in tread life saying "A very good choice if tread life is a lower priority" contradicting the high 340 UTQG rating again so there definitely is an issue here . Comments? Thanks. |

You can't go by treadwear alone. Tire manufacturers rate their own tires, it's not regulated by a single group like it could be. For instance the PSS has a 300 TW but lasts much longer than the DWs despite the lower TW. The Bridgestone RE71R lasts about half as long as the Direzza ZIISS, both have the same TW rating.

This is the reason I did not buy Conti DW's...
Yes they get great reviews for the most part, but do some searching and many people have had to get new tires after 10-14k miles... not completely terrible for a performance summer tire, but not nearly enough for someone like me, who in reality just wants a good tire for street/daily driving. I recently bought new wheels and tires... and I first was dead set on Conti DW's but changed my mind to the Hankook V12 Evo2's... I am very happy with them to say the least, and from many of the reviews I've read, should last much longer than the DWs.

10-15k is not good enough for a daily driven street car, that never sees the track...

Just though I'd also share my experience for posterity reasons.
Car: 2009 135i E88 Convertible Lowered H&R Pro Aligned I put the Continental DW's on last April, and as of today, the tires currently have ~11,000 miles. I usually run 33 front / 32 rear for an AutoX day, but decided 35psi all around would suffice for daily driving. Recently this year, I've noticed the rear tires wearing out in the middle of the tread. Tire pressure has been 35psi front and rear. Logic dictates over-inflation. My alignment has been checked over and it's good. I've adjusted the rears to 33psi and will see how it goes. Upon checking the front tires, they are in perfect condition. The tire wear is perfectly even. On the upside, the tires are extremely sticky perform outrageously well in the wet. I usually like keeping same tire brands on all 4 wheels, but the DW's will force me to find a more suitable rear tire with the same sort of traction, but better wear. |

I had the same issue with an E46 a few years ago. Turned out my rear trailing arm bushings were worn. Wore out a set of Michelin A/S 3's in 5000 miles. I would definitely check all the rear bushings and also the check alignment.

On both sets of rear tires (again like everyone else my fronts lasted me a lot longer) I had the same disappointing rear treadwear with DW's. Sounds like a tire issue not an alignment problem.
