That being a said a nice slightly underpowered E46 325i can be a great first car. It has served me well. Good handling and its fast enough to be fun, but slow enough to where you have to try to go fast to go fast. |

lol i love how everyone on here knows how ALL 16 year olds drive, just because your kid(s) or kids you know would drive a sports car recklessly doesn't mean that all teenagers do.
to the op: does he wants a sports car? SUV? or just something to get him from point a to b?

lol i think the OP is actually the kid..Getting a kid a 40k will only fullfill his idea of self entitlement. Get him a Honda Civic lol

Its not the car that is going to change the kid, its how he/she was raised and how he/she uses the car. I was given an Infiniti G37S sedan as my first car (leased) and I took care of that car like a baby. All of my friends in 335s, range rovers and benzes were getting into accidents and racing the streets. My parents on the other hand refused to let me drive the car by myself for 3-4 months (even after I got my license) because they knew it was a powerful car ... much more so than the drivers ed cars I was training in. I also don't feel self entitled and I have respect for cars... even my BMW now doesn't make me want to stop reaching higher. I plan (hopefully) to be able to afford, comfortably, a Ferrari of some sort by the time I'm 30/35 without any help from my parents - I envy my parents and want to go above and beyond without any of their financial aid after college/graduate school.

Assuming this thread is legit, even though I grew up in the Motorcity, and cars were everything in my family (Dad worked in the auto industry), my parents still made me earn my car myself. I had to buy my first car myself, finance it myself, etc. That went for all my cars since.
I think it helped me appreciate my cars more than if they were just handed to me. That's how it'll be for my kids. If they want a car, they'll have to work for it. No hand-me-downs. |

My first car was a $500 plymouth acclaim. Get him what he wants. So long as it isn't overboard or over the top. You know your son better than us so you should be able to make the best call.

I don't think OP cares for any parenting advice nor was he very specific in what he wanted for his son. This is too fast, that engine is too big...Why don't you narrow it down a bit more for us instead of wasting out time?

Believe it or not that was my first car. I got a G550 at 17, that thing was a tank and I loved it to death. Kept me safe too when some idiot rear ended me. His car was totaled and all I needed was a new rear bumper. At the end of the day it doesnt matter what you buy your child any car nowadays can reach 100 easily. The first day I drove my G to high school I almost flipped it racing my friend in a 650. Being 19 right now I remember those days very well, my parents sat me down and simply explained the facts, as a parent thats all you can do and hope your child listens.

Get him a used 335i and take out a good life insurance policy as well as a bodily injury policy so you can at least make some money when he does something stupid. Also make sure you have a good umbrella policy$1-$2 million should suffice.

The obvious answer you will get from everyone is a BMW 328i, 128i,x3. And for everyone else you're ALL messing it up for the poor kid most answers are "NOTHING FAST" "WHY PAY $40K FOR A KIDS CAR" "NOTHING MORE THAN $15K" |
