What is it that you want to DIY? The only solution for wastegate rattle that is DIY is Mr.5's fix. Search that.

That's not the only fix. Mr's 5's is a hardware fix via actuator adjustment. Even with the actuators adjusted properly you can still have rattle if the wastegate flapper is too close to the seat. In that case the best option is the software solution that both the Procede and BMS tunes offer.

The tune fix hold them apart just enough (when you find the right setting) so there is no rattle, but close enough that when you go on boost, the delay is not noticeable when you go on boost.

I would suggest if you have a tune, or are getting one to try the software fix first.

I didn't say that was the only fix. I said that's the only DIY, which is what the OP was looking for.

Try all the diy's you can, but it could cost you new turbos. Mine got so bad that my wastegates wouldn't hold boost and I'd get limp mode.

Rob Beck did a full redesign of the internal waste gates to billet material. The upgrade includes the bushing, flapper, flapper washer, arm, and lever. He found the stock parts to need improvement in their sloppiness.

His initial thoughts when first looking at the components 3 years ago:

For a while I wondered why this would be done but now believe I understand. What is wearing out on these things may or may not be the wastegate actuator, but its definitely the wastegate/flapper/arm assembly and bushing that are all integrated into the turbine housing. I am tearing one down now and am amazed at all the excess clearances in this assembly. So, that being said, anyone buying refurbished turbos be absolutely sure this has been addressed or you may end up with tons of $$ into housings that are going to turn into rattlers (or are already rattlers). It will take some fairly major work to correct this as well, as this assembly was not designed to be replaced (its considered "good for life" generally).

Im theorizing that since the flapper is held open so much of the time with this new actuator arrangement, the flapper and arm/assembly are constantly being subjected to exhaust pressures and heat. And since these are "floating" components they are subjected to lots of movements and rotations (flapper).. and hence wear. It seems that unless there was some revision in materials used or other supporting component, all of these cars will begin to rattle at some point.

It may end up being that the newer redesigned actuators help absorb vibrations in the actuator arm and flapper, so definitely replace these things if you are in there as they are cheap new (so I hear). Perhaps they have a tighter radial movement in the rod to keep the wastegate arm more stationary. This would definitely help keep the bushing and/or arm assembly from wearing, or at least extend the life of the components.

BMW installs the actuators to hopefully quiet things down enough to make the consumer happy and they leave them alone, but the root of the problem is not addressed unless the consumer still isnt content with the rattle and pursues a further fix.
