996 Turbo .. Wow

So i picked up my 996 turbo on saturday... and what a beast!

Now I've had the chance to drive it a little harder, the car is plain scary at the speeds it can hit with minimum fuss.

Hitting 100+ is dangerously easy - i only noticed the speed when i glanced down at the speedo. I doubt you can drive this car in anger as you'll easily double the speed limit.

Even when not trying its just quick .... too quick for the roads potentially.

An amazing car... and very glad i decided to take the plunge.

My choice was between this and a 997 C4S ... glad i went for this. Bang for buck wise it in another league, and find a good low mileage one and should almost be free motoring as people are saying these (esp with an X50 performance upgrade and manual box - which mine is) will rise.

Pros:
Cheap - relatively
Fast .. very.
450bhp & 0-60 in sub 4 secs as a standard car for 28k
Fuel consumption over 300 mixed miles inc 1hr 20 stuck in traffic has been 22mpg.
Looks are extremely purposeful.

Cons:
Space
Dated interior
Could lose your licence easy - need serious self restraint.

Got that itch.

39 here.... GTR was about 10k more for a decent one so out of my reach.

Also from what I've read the running costs are seriously high - tho thats all anecdotal rather then first hand.

I think the other thing was for me i want a car i can drive manually, as opposed to it being all computer controlled.

40, and a GTR has no appeal to me.

However, the guy next door has a mental one, serious upgrades and one of, if not the, fastest in the UK.

He also has a 330xd as a daily driver so might post on here, I will have to ask him.

Looks lovely. I want a Porsche before the 40th birthday, so Ive got 4 years left.
Its probably the only car to tempt me away from the M3.

What I love about the Turbo's is they just look fast, even when parked up.

Sounds good fun.

I'll watch and see how you get on with it in the longer term. Hopefully no costly surprises.

If you want to know running costs mine is coming up for 5 years in Sept.

As i said in your other thread. 911 Turbo does hold a special place for me. Yours is stunning.... One day........maybe when i have space. But i can't see myself coming out of the GTR into anything else at the moment. And i've gotten lazy....and think changing gears is for suckers!! (only kidding but that's the phrase me and mate use after i convinced him to get a Z4M with paddles!) And I use an X5 40D as my Daily Driver.

I'm 40 next month!

First issue raised its head with the 996....

So yesterday went to fill the car at Shell and put about 18 litres in, went and paid... came back out and fuel gauge hadnt moved a bit, and the distance to empty thing had stayed the same.

Told the guy behind the counter, he suggested i go for a drive round the block to see if it shifted. I did that and nothing. He was alone so couldnt check the pump. I recorded all details and left.

Then on the way home i saw another shell, stopped and out exactly the same amount in but this time the fuel gauge rose like it should.

Today wrote a letter of complaint to shell ... and posted my issue on the 911 forum.

Turns out the 996 has a weird shaped tank and unless you put in more than 20 litres- it wont register!!! So when i did 2nd top up it went past 20 litres and showed up.

Anyway - shell replied to say sorry they couldnt refund my money - but have 1000 shell points instead!

What a muppet....

I'd guess the tank design is to do with ensuring fuel flow isn't interrupted at high cornering speeds? ???

But more importantly who doesn't fill to the brim!! 18 won't get you very far!!

I only had 30 on me... as left wallet at home

The issue is the car is 4wd so the tank is split into sections so it all fits in, and unless the bottom section is completely filled it doesnt register!

Rest assured - all fill ups in future will be 21 litres minimum

(BTW - MPG so far has been 22mpg which is great given i got stuck in a hours stop start traffic on saturday)

Car sounds amazing. Old neighbour has a 911 Carrera II S (I think?!) that was similar time to 60 and was brutally fast.

How did you fill up twice if you only had £30?

Just got back from Le Mans 24hr. I was in my remapped 335d and a mate had a 2008 997 turbo and it is staggeringly quick, I mean just incredible pace. I've been in very few other cars including track cars that build speed in the same way.
