Not sure if I may have the beginnings of judder issues. I've got an E90 320d (manufactured August 2011) that has done just over 10k miles, and I certainly notice judder every morning as I pull out of my driveway. It's not so noticeable after that, although I do also find that it's very difficult to get a smooth gear change in 2nd, 3rd, and to some extent 4th - the clutch seems to part engage and then slip a bit before fully engaging (don't know if this is a symptom of the CDV?).

It's liveable at the moment, but whenever I drive my wife's E87 123d I realise how poor the clutch is in the E90 as the 123d is a joy - lighter clutch, no judder, and super smooth changes in any gear. Given they're basically the same engine and similar drivetrain, is it worth taking my E90 into the dealer or are they likely to say there's no issue at the moment?

What sort of driving do you do? Mine became unbearable because I spend most of my time in town and I live in Sheffield so hill starts are frequent. Mine did start gradually too, it doesn't just appear. The most annoying thing is you start to try and drive around it which just stresses you out even more.

As far as the CDV is concerned I am quite sure it plays no part in the judder. I had mine out and then back in again, all it did was alter a characteristic of the gear change. That slight slipping does sound like the CDV doing it's job because I believe it's to stop the clutch just getting dumped.

As far as the 123d is concerned have a look babybmw.net They were discussing the clutch judder issue and unless I dreamed it I'm sure the 123d doesn't suffer.

I had similar problems and mentioned this during a routine service at Cooper Sunderland. To their credit they asked to keep the car a little longer and changed the clutch without any fuss. The car drives much better with no judder and the gear changes are much smoother. Mine is a Dec 2010 build.

Can anyone tell me if they have had their clutches replaced for free or some kind of discount if your car was out of any warranty? I have a 58 plate 320d that's only coverered 39,000 miles and judder is started to be present, but can't afford to fork out over £1000 to get this changed

I spoke to 2 dealers yesterday one in Cardiff and trainer Swansea, Cardiff denied there be a common issue with the judder saying they've never had a 320d or any BMW with this problem before, Swansea didn't say yes or no but said we can ask for a goodwill payment from BMW I'd the clutch needs to be replaced and that's what he said to me without even asking if they could get a goodwill.

The way clutch replacements work with BMW – you have to authorise the labour cost for gearbox removal. IIRC this is around 2 BMW labour rate hours. This is regardless of whether it’s under warranty or not. However, going back to the way goodwill gestures work (when out of warranty), It’s usually the case where you contribute to 50% labour or 50% parts. Now this is dependent on the tests that the dealership carries out. They send the test results of your old clutch to BMW UK, who basically authorise or decline changing it. If they decline it, you’re basically stuffed with your old clutch and you can either pay the labour rate and parts cost to put it right, or have your old clutch put back in for the gearbox removal cost.

For the cost of parts and gearbox removal, I reckon you could get a could indy to do this for the same price, rather than having the uncertainty of BMW doing it under goodwill.

Yeah you can. Just ensure you go armed with your chassis number, as opposed to a part number from RealOEM (as this will no doubt be the older part).

I think this issue only affects diesels due to the torque levels outputted.

90k on the clock on the same clutch.
Slight judder when cold.
Just give it a few more revs

If you're happy with that then great, but a clutch that judders slightly is much heavier in feel every day and no where near as precise, compared with one that works properly it is a massive difference.

It's just the first pull off on a cold morning and very slight.
Not worth spending £1000 for a new one.

No it's not, that is when you really notice it, drive a car without the judder and every gear change becomes so much nicer.

I agree not worth spending a grand on if it doesn't bother you much, but for me it was worth selling the car and loosing a couple of grand.

I'd have run my E91 off a cliff if BMW hadn't come up with a fix.

after having this for four years on my 320i and now having it on my 320d I thought I'd have a look to see if there is a fix yet and thankfully that looks like the case!!!

I assume those that have had the replacement clutch have not suffered any since?

I'll give my dealer a call to get it booked in I think.

Cheers

I had the replacement clutch fitted in Sep last year and I've recently noticed that a slight judder has started to appear again.

Just had the new "Clutch pack" fitted when the car was in for service last week as they tested the car and agreed that there was a slight judder there. Car feels like a completely different beast now - each gear change is smooth without the normal thud on pretty much every one, when I'm pulling away from junctions it engages immediately and just works rather than juddering to a greater or lesser degree, and the clutch has a lighter action to it as well.

I would say anyone who has this issue should get to a dealer to have them check it out as although I was living with it, it was very irritating and spoiling what was otherwise a great car to drive. Now it IS a great car to drive, no ifs buts or maybes.
