Problem with M3 subframe bushings..
Being impatient to install my m3 bushings (my appointment was for 1.02.2013 at known installer but an hour away from where I live, we don't have any good local BMW tuners), I took a reasonable offer from local mechanic that works on VW and Audis, he told me he checked and he know how to do it and also has the specific tool for the job. Drop the car in the morning, he calls me at 6pm "you got to pick up that car I can't deal with it anymore.... those bushings don't wanna go in all the way..." I was like WTF...
I went there and I see he got the car ready but all the bushings were sticking out like half an inch see the pic.... I dont know what he used to put them in but he told me he tried everything and they dont wanna go in anymore...He didn't have the specific tool needed for the job, he lied to me. He was very upset and told me to just take that f.... car out of his sight. So now all m3 bushings need to be pressed another half an inch, but no one wants to finish something someone else started plus its Christmas. Anyone else with M3 bushings install problems cause I did search but couldn't find anything? The front ones are installed from the top as they supposed to and the rear ones from the bottom. Learn my lesson. If have to do specific install make sure stuck with people you know can do the job. Im gona try fixing it myself tomorrow, I was thinking maybe the problem is cold weather making rubber stiffer... Any advice appreciated. Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas! |

I hope this is not going to cause damage to the bushings, because there is a little rubber edge now on the bushings where they meet the frame (you can see it in the pic)

i'm having a hard time telling from the pic, but there is supposed to be a small lip on the top and bottom of the bushing "holder" on the subframe so there is not metal touching metal.
are you sure it's not all the way in already? also, i found that the black pipe unions that home depot sells fit perfectly. I think you need a 4" union. The big ones only come in (i believe) 3.5" and 4". buy both and return the one that's too small how did they remove the old bushes without making some kind of pull/press tool anyway? torch and chisel? |

Bet the mech didn't lube 'em. I used silicone grease....others use soap. Some use soapy water spray. One thing: All 4 subframe/bushing bolts should be threaded in several turns to start.....then just snugged....then torqued. If bushings were lubed, should go the last 0.5" no prob. Naturally the tool's preferred. Good luck! |

Thanks for the ideas guys. I did it last night and it wasn't as hard as the tech(not sure if I should call him that) described it..
@tofu-THANKS. "i found that the black pipe unions that home depot sells fit perfectly" thats what I picked from Home Depot + some 1/2 rod, nuts and washers. |

just take a look at what HPA is selling for $500 to get an idea. it's basically the same thing, just not as pretty. you could use EMT conduit, but i couldn't find any the right size at home depot. |

To press them in I followed tofu's advice and got black union 2"(this is the largest size my local home depot offers) and just removed the inserts, it fits perfect to press in 2 rear bushings. For 2 front ones I used tools from the bearing kit. Sorry but I didn't take any pics. |

Listen to this man! He knows his stuff! I've always used soapy water. Use bar soap to make soapy water and avoid the dish washing liquids like Palmolive and Ajax. Those will dry out the rubber and it will tear/crack.
