Be carefull not to get one with the base stereo

Some of the early builds had the ampless tweeter less stereo which is
a POS. They went back to the Hi Fi stereo for the bottom level unit in the
US in Sept of 2010 but some still got through with that unit. If you don't want to modify the stereo be sure to get the L7 . If you do want to modify the stereo
the Hi Fi is much easier to modify than the base stereo.
All the 2010's had the base stereo.(unless l7 was ordered)
This apply s to US cars only.

Personally, I intentionally selected a model year that had an N54 over an N55 because I like this engine more.
Also, if you get a HPFP or injectors or what have you before the 120k miles the part they install is warrantied for 2 years from the install date and i think unlimited miles ( not quite sure on that). That was my concern when I had my HPFP replaced since i was getting close to 120k. This might be true of any dealer installed parts I guess.

I'm also considering 2011 335i's. I was hopefully the N55 wouldn't have the same HPFP issues of the N54, but it appears to be problematic, maybe a bit less so.

What's crazy is that there are less than 10 CPO 335 sedans within 200 miles of 90501, at least on autotrader. Of those, only a couple have premium and sport packages, and dealers are asking $33-35k.

Not sure what I'm going to do. I'm coming from a Honda-only automotive history, so I'm a bit skittish with the reported problems here. I know that forums like this only bring out the die hards, so the problems can be amplified, but it's still worrisome.

I apologize as I'm a newb, but can you be more specific about what to look for? How can you tell a stereo is the "L7" version? Is what you're talking about the case for all cars made in 2010? Thanks for the info!

You 100% shouldn't be worried about the HPFP problem. This is covered under warranty till 120,000 miles so you're good.
If you plan on modding your 335i then I would highly suggest not getting a N55 motor. The N54's are much more mod friendly and faster. The 2010 models are definitely the least problematic that I've seen since BMW had 4 years to perfect the N54 components. I mean BMW does use the N54 motor in the 1M and 335is...

As somebody who spent about 6 months researching/looking for a 2011 335i coupe, I feel I can finally offer some help to a prospective buyer!

My 2011 E92 N55 335i was manufactured May 2010 and has an in-service date of October 2010. Manufacturer warranty good through October 2014 and CPO through October 2016.

What's even crazier is that there were many more 2011 335i CPOs available about 4 months ago. Starting around September last year, I used to search Autotrader, Cars.com, and BMWUSA for CPO 2011 335i coupes probably a few times a week. There used to be like 3-5 within 75 miles of me at any given time, then by like November/December, there was 1. Fastforward to January February, there was still only 1 (and it was the same one). So I started looking nationwide, and there were still only like 12-20 at any given time.

Very few of them have M Sport package, but it seems like half have the Sports package, and almost none are manuals. I ended up buying that 1 CPO that was within a 75 mile radius. Turns out I was lucky, because it had the sports package, premium package, cold weather package, and comfort access. It was listed at $38k, though I got them to come down $3k in price.

Regarding reliability, I still think it's too early to know how reliable it will be compared to N54 and other sports coupes. Even in that N55 thread, there doesn't even appear to be anybody over 50,000 miles (mine is currently at 30k).

I just got a 2011 335i and my previous and only cars were a 94 civic 5MT and 04 accord V6 6MT which I got new and sold with 163k miles without one issue and I drove it hard!
I love driving my 335i and hopefully won't have any of those recurring problems some have reported. So far so good!

I ended up finding a very very clean 2011 BMW 335i xdrive auto loaded to the gills including the msport package. Bought it in January. Loving it! No issues at all thus far. Car just came off of a 2 yr lease.

I've driven a few n54 auto xdrives and thought they felt faster. However, I suspect some of that feeling is based in reality and some is due to the peakier power delivery the n54 seemed to have, and it had a bit more lag. That being said, I specifically wanted a 2011 because it had the N55. I will probably not be modding this car much if at all, and I also liked the modest bump in fuel economy the n55 has over the n54.

They are all great cars, but I must admit I'm hoping I've reduced any exposure to fuel pump and waste gate rattle woes that a fair share of n54 cars seem to have. It's not that you wouldn't be protected financially from those issues (120k fuel pump warranty); it's that I want to avoid the PITA process of bringing the car in to the dealer in the first place.

I almost didn't get nav...VERY glad I got it. One of the reasons I wanted a new car was because my old car didn't have nav, BT, sat radio, etc. I would have regretted not getting nav and the cool things that are a part of that feature. Idrive is great!

Agree, iDrive has a lot of advantages other than just the Navigation aspect. BT with assistance is nice as well.

So I'm going to hijack this thread...

I would like thoughts/advice on the 2011 335 sedan I'm considering. First, and this will sound silly, should I be concerned at all that the MY 2011 I'm looking at has a production date of 4/2010? The in service date is 7/30/2010. Is it bad so get a car so early in the MY production run?

Also, the dealer sent me the service history (different than what shows up on carfax), and at 22k miles the car was brought in for "Driving at constant speed under all operating conditions misfires / malfunction". Is that the HPFP failure?

And not specific to this car: how easy it is to remove window tint? I will have a pro shop do it of course, but I'm wondering how much of a PITA it is.

Price. This car has 32k miles, is cpo, M sport and premium pkg, with navigation. Space gray metallic with black dakota interior. Clean carfax, but its a lease return. At this point the dealer is asking for $35700, but I'm working on bringing that down. Ay thoughts on how low they'll go? Or what I should demand?

Thanks for the input!

I would seek further understanding about the misfire issue, but it happened 10,000 miles ago so it was probably fully resolved.

The 2011 I bought came off of a 2 year lease. I had no problem with that. In fact, I preferred it over the other demos I was looking at since relatively few people drove the leased car vs. a demo.

Are you looking at an automatic or manual transmission? Are you trading in a car or just looking to buy it outright? Any other features on the car? This info will help you better understand whether or not you're getting a good deal. It's not a good deal if you get a good price on the new car but get taken for your trade in.

My n55 with PPK2 and PE has been basically flawless.

In it's second Canadian Winter too.

Few Rattles but those are those pesky door seals I have to constantly keep clean.
Smashed into a pothole and blew some electronic module for one of my adaptive headlights...warranty fixed that.
Keep your battery charged in winter. I notice nasty starts but its normal and common for the N55 according to this forum.

Thats about it. Turbos...oops TURBO is awesome

Yeah I'm not too worried about the problem at 22k miles, but was just wondering if that sounded like the HPFP or maybe an injector problem.

In terms of what else th car has, here is a summary:
Base warranty good until 7/30/2014, CPO until 7/30/2016.
Automatic transmission (needs to be wife-friendly)
0ZMP M Sport Package
07XA M steering wheel w/paddles
02MF 18" Alloy Star-spoke wheels
0ZPP Premium Package
0302 Anti-theft alarm system
0544 Dynamic Cruise Control
0609 Navigation system
04AB Dark Burl Walnut wood trim
06FL iPod and USB adapter
0494 Heated front seats
Exterior Trim Code: A52 - Space Gray Metallic
Interior Color Code: LCSW - Black Dakota Leather
Motor Type: N55
Platform/Engineering Series: E90

And a lot of other stuff that isn't worth mentioning.

All that for approximately $35k. Again, 32k miles, and it's CPO. Good deal?

Assuming its a manual transmission, no Harmon Kardon stereo, no convenience package, rwd, and you arent trading any car in then yes this seems like a fair price. My own personal experience with buying a 2011 335 was based on the Midwest marketplace though, so your Cali market may be different. But it seems pretty fair. The car is equipped well and has a great color=someone will buy it. I found that if you really want a killer deal on a 335 near me, you should look for a rwd, non-nav without the sports package. Not the car I wanted to buy though...

Thanks! Forgot to say that it's an automatic (fixed my previous post). Does that change opinion much? I know 6MT is more rare. And I would prefer manual (driven manuals my whole life), but now that I'm married it's got to be an auto. At least the auto in the 3-series is pretty nice.

Auto=more desirable to the general public/market and it costs more too. It sounds like an even better deal to me.

No apologies necessary for wanting an auto 335i. It's a solid piece and drives/shifts quite nicely. One of the best I've ever driven actually IMO. Plus, the auto allows me to borrow my wife's Honda Pilot to tow the bass boat!

My 2011 335i had a production date of 05/2010 and in service date 10/2010 and it has/had a clean carfax (corporate fleet) and doesn't appear to have much trouble at all (going in for a fog lamp malfunction this week).

I agree that you should inspect the misfires thing. Other than that, I had to remove tint from my Mustang a while ago and it's as simple as purchasing a good fabric steamer, applying it to the window for a few minutes and then peeling the tint after making a small incision with a razor (if you want to DIY). Not sure how much a tint installer would charge for it.

My car had ridiculous tint on the windows before I bought it. My dealer said they HAD to remove the tint because it wasn't legal, but they never made it sound like it was difficult in the least.

All this info has been great!

Not to thread jack, but I am in the same situation as the OP. I'm looking at a 2011 335i xDrive CPO with almost 40k miles. This would be my first BMW purchase.

It has a 6 speed manual transmission. I thought that was a plus, but someone mentioned that this actually can detract from value later?

I'm looking to get the car this weekend, and any input would be much appreciated.

It will, as most people (3 series buyers included) want an automatic. Not too big a deal though if you plan on keeping the car for a long time though. I plan on selling my car shortly after the CPO warranty period is up, so that's one of the reasons I ended up with an xdrive. If my wife could drive a manual trans car, then I would have considered one but really, all that would have done is made my car harder to sell in 3-4 years. Yes, it would be more fun to drive (I do prefer a manual) but the auto is very good-one of the best I've ever driven.

I do recommend the sports package. Suspension is the same on all xdrive cars I believe but the sport rims really help fill the wheel wheels out on the xdrive cars. And I really love the msport, if for nothing else than the steering wheel! Feels awesome.
