Does the EGR have to be physically blocked or can Ecotune take care of this through software?

Even if is tuned out, you still want to physically block it to avoid issues with EGR cooler.

Wow I'm surprised the dealer is willing to do that for you.

Great news BMW was able to come to the table with a solution.

I have recently had my '09 335d diagnosed with buildup -- again. I had the carbon build up cleaned at 40km (under warranty). Now it has come back again and I was told even if I did elect to clean this I would likely need to do this again for another 40km.

Dealer quoted $3k for the job and the car is out of warranty coverage. When this occurred the first time (car was in for 4 months) I asked for extended warranty but was given Certified warranty. Apparently the certified did not cover this so if anyone should buy a pre-owned 335d under certified series then apparently they are SOL as well.

Not sure what my next steps are other than to write to BMW Canada.

The SIB looks like this is just clean out procedure and does not address root cause of the problem. BMW needs to come out with a permanent fix. How did they fixed the 2014 535d or 528d (or have they?)? There was no diesel offered for 2012 and 2013 so something must have been up at corporate level.

Wow. Are you now at 80k miles? We should start to see if folks with an extended warranty (not CPO) will be covered for the $3000 cleaning.

I'm almost done my warranty and entering the CPO period when they did my clean-up at 60k my SA assured me that if this happens again I will be covered.

You should really talk to BMW Canada or talk to the service manager.

I was assured that CPA and 2 yr service warranty would cover this also when it was initially serviced. I would get that in writing if were you.

Sorry to hear that man. I would fight with them to get them to cover it especially now that there is an SIB for the cleaning available. Will not take them much to do it for you. After though, that is after they clean it for you, I would block the thing off, install a catch can and never have an issue again. And now we do not have AirCare you should not have any problems with bi-annual inspection.

Got news from my dealer. CBU.
In need to have the intake manifold cleaned. about $1900 total. (1400 for intake and about 500 for the cylinder head which needs to be sent out somewhere else).
Of course not covered by the emissions warranty, which in my mind caused it all (EGR valve).

im assuming that the $1400 for intake includes all the labor and the $500 for the cylinder head is just their cost. The intake itself is about $700 for a new part and no more than 2 hrs to replace in a shop so the rest of that $1400 must be the rest of the cleaning and related labor. $1900 still seems like a lot but its good to see that number coming down. Does the dealer know about the bulletin for cleaning that doesnt involve head removal?

I would suggest calling BMW North America. Talk to them.

I called BMWNA and was told about the warranty not covering this issue.

Hooper
I just left a message to my (idiot) SA about what you said.
He really pissed me off stating CBU is not caused by emissions/exhaust.
Apparently it occurs naturally, not related to the EGR or anything. He said the engine oil being dirty is most likely the cause of it. @#$%

He just changed the story now.

1400 for parts and tax, labor 3200, and cal head 500.

I'll set the car on fire at the dealership.

Remind us your mileage and state of warranty. CPO? Bought new?

$5100?

labor $3200 they must have recently hired a bunch of turtles to work their service department. I would put a call in to another local dealership. Maybe just let them know you need SIB 110314 performed and ask how much. Then when they tell you how much, unleash about how it should be covered under warranty and whatever else might be on your mind

SIB 110314
