I'm almost positive this is a repost, but I did search and couldn't find a thread asking the same question.

Is it safe for me to run COBB AP Stage/Map 1 with a completely 2007 335xi WITHOUT an oil cooler? Any knowledge and/or experience on the subject is very much welcomed and appreciated. Apologies again for the possible repost.

Anytime u run more boost u will experience more heat...as long as ur not tracking ur car u should be ok..depending on boost levels..u will def run hotter especially when u get on it..

if ur under warranty get ur dealer to retrofit u an OEM cooler..not sure if they are still doing this ..but guys were complaining when they got their cars w/o one. n i heard that some dealers were.

ridculous that they would build these cars w/o an OC

You will be completely fine.. Watch your head gauge located on your RPM Tachometer. If you see it rise above 150 start taking it easy.
I drive spiritedly from time to time and I have never seen my engine rise above 120.
I have COBB, Intake, Straight pipes and I have no oil cooler, I've been fine!

Once I get my DPs and FMIC this month I'll run even cooler.
As far as oil coolers go, just don't go WOT for 8 hours straight and you'll be fine!
I even made several WOT pulls / Several logs / Several highway pulls / races with my buddies JB4 a few weekends ago when it was 23 celcius out, never went above 120 and had no issues.

When you say it will run hotter, are you referring to the overall temperature of the engine bay or specifically oil temps? I was under the impression that a tune will cause the engine (turbos, etc) to run hotter, but that the temperature increase of engine oil will be mild in comparison. Can you clarify?

Thanks for the info. What oil temps were you seeing before you added the tune? My oil temp gauge typically reads in between 240-250 F (115 - 120) and I'm completely stock so based on your temps, I shouldn't see any increase at all. Can you advise on this?

I was running 250 when it was 30 deg outside with the cobb tune. I made an oil cooler and haven't seen it go above 245 since even in 95+ deg heat. Get a STETT or make your own.

I know a guy who ran GIAC stage 1 in philly/jersey without an oil cooler and he said he never had a problem, even in summer.

My car has the OEM oil cooler, and with the Cobb AP I havent seen any increase in oil temps at all. Certainly nothing over 250.

Based on what I've heard, I'd try the Cobb first and worry about an oil cooler only if you see there are actually going to be problems on your car. You could always just take 2 minutes to flash back to stock or down to the 91 map if you thought the tune was causing excess heat. Again, I don't know of any instances of that happening (but maybe you'll be motivated to drive your car harder with the tune than you do without it... ).

My oil temps would be right around 240-250 when it was stock and it is still the same after running the Cobb. If you are only pushing the car on the street I wouldn't sweat about it. if you plan on tracking your car then i would highly suggest a oil cooler.

This might be an obvious question, but what are safe oil temperatures? I don't have an Oil cooler either in my 335xi and I try to watch the temps. But I'm not really sure what that safe range is before you cause damage or go into limp mode. Thx!

On this car 170-245 F is safe operating temp. Most other cars are 215 Max.

Wow so that means my car is teetering on the bring of unsafe 100% of the time. I don't think I've ever seen oil temps below 235-240 F once fully warmed up. Scary.

I agree, Very Scary!! Does anyone know if BMWNA is still doing the retrofits and how hard it is to get this done?

My fully warmed temps with the oil cooler are always from 1-3 ticks below 250, regardless of the time of year. There's a reason 250 is the center of the range on the gauge (namely: it's fine).

You can most definitely use the COBB AP Stage 1 flash without an oil cooler and a lot of 2007 owners most definitely run this same combo. If you're worried about an increase in temperature, you may also want to explore the option of getting an oil cooler retrofitted onto the car. One of the more popular choices is the AR design oil cooler kit with a Setrab core which does come with a retrofit kit for those of you 07 owners who need it. To the OP, I'll go ahead and send you a PM with more details!

Haha so this would mean the oem oil cooler doesn't really cool oil temps any more than no oil cooler does?

On later build cars bmw changed the gauge on the dash so 250 is right in the middle which is where my car is about at ever since day one tune or no tune. Earlier models had a different gauge and seems to read lower.

Well, at least not in the conditions in which I normally drive my car.

My oil temp gauge's center on my 07 335 is 210 deg...before tune i had questioned why temps would pass the middle point but i guess its normal....I have jb4 and drove in 100+ deg weather out in palm springs and temps never went above 240.

This thread has been helpful as I just got a 335i after selling my M3 and the first thing I did was buy a used JB+ last night as it was all I knew on my first 335xi.
From all of the reading I have done tonight, the Stage 1 - 93 COBB will give me a more enjoyable and overall stronger tune, right?

And... I am going to run it w/o the stock oil cooler for now.

Really? Middle on my 07's oil gauge is 250.

If you care about the longevity of your engine you get an oil cooler. Don't turn a blind eye to the fact that this car needs an oil cooler even when it's stock.
