Hi all, I just went underneath my car and measured the OD pipe from the muffler and it comes to 70mm (2.75 inches) - Does any body know what the PE exhaust excepts? I am leaning more towards the Eisenmann sport rear silencer 2XØ76MM.

If any one can confirm what theirs is would be much appreciated. Cheers

Hi all,

I have been trying to do some more research on this for my car's exhaust and trying to work out what the real difference is between E90 build before 06/06 exhaust.

When I had a look under my car it looks pretty much identical to the US Spec ED91 on the DIY guide: See pic below:



The only difference being is I cant seem to see the 2 cat converters at the front of the exhaust on my car. Perhaps need to get right under my car.

What I wanted to ask is in the pic is that a resonator/muffler before the final muffler or is it a Cat converter?

If it isn't a CAT converter and my car has CAT converters at the front Why couldn't I just buy the US Spec BMW PE exhaust with Mid pipe and it would solve my problems?

Any thoughts would be great. Infact any one with E90 build before 06/06 who can clarify would be greatly appreciated.

that thing about 45cm long in the middle, that doesn't exist on the 'straight pipes' on the left, is a centre resonator aka 'muffler'

in theory you could do just that - buy US spec PE with mid pipe.

Any exhaust shop can put together midpipe for you though to replace the centre resonator.

Hi bmroxm5 i think I have worked it out.

I did a search for my exact car on RealOEM and show my exhaust here:

I cant seem to understand all the part numbers but it starts that 02 exhaust is 70mm - there is another version for 65mm also. Also mentions somthing else for M Sports package (which I have) but not sure what it means.

When i was looking at the exhaust page I believe that the CAT converts are actually built into the exhaust manafold for my E90 - Have a look here:

So as long as I am not removing my CAT (which you confirmed in a center resonator) I should be able to plug and play via the US version.

bmroxm5 - you seem to know your stuff so let me know your thoughts I would prefer entire OEM rather than going to the exhaust shop to cut things up.

As Bmrox' wrote, the center part is a resonator. A lot of people on the US forums delete the resonator when fitting an aftermaket muffler. I'm not really sure if there may be a risk of drone or resonance at certain RPM levels, since the resonator is there for that kind of reason.

I found a pic of the front cat on my car. It is part of the exhaust header and is right next the the steering shaft. You won't see it unless you are fully under the car, or otherwise point your camera in the right direction like I did.

for some reason I thought you had a 4cylinder 320, but re-reading your posts seeing as you have an E91 325i with N52, yes the cats are built into the exhaust manifold - could of told you before if I realised lol.

If you want OEM for piece of mind that's cool, but I've already voiced my thoughts in that an exhaust shop can do you a quality piece of stainless steel without the BMW logo for a decent price to replace your centre resonator.

I'm not too familiar with the difference between US and Euro spec performance exhausts though.
Does the US version include the midpipes? Does it fit the E91? if so, then you are good to go.

John yes deleting the centre resonator may induce drone but I'm thinking many people successfully use the PE with straight pipes and have no drone? I would think that the rear muffler would cancel out the drone.

Yes, I also read that on the US forum. I'd expect a genuine BMW exhaust not to have any serious drone issues, but I think it still depends a bit on the user's preference for sound. I still intend to get a Eisenmann muffler but I'm going to leave it until around mid year, mainly because I'll be taking my car to the dealer for some warranty work and servicing.

Hay guys, thanks for the confirmation around the CAT - bmroxm5 sorry I think I have confussed you furhter LOL! - The pic I put up is from US E91 - I mainly wanted to point out that the orginal exhaust looks very similar to mine but minus the two cats at the front.

John01 thanks for confirming that the CAT is part of the exhaust header.

bmroxm5 - the car that I have is a 06/06 E90 325i MSports (N52)- The exhaust on my car is similar to the US version with the resonator and CATS right up where the exhaust header is

You are right in that the exhaust shop can easily do a resonator delete. In melbourne I would estimate they would charge me around $100- to $150 bucks.

I have confirmed that the US spec (..81) BMW PE exhaust comes with the muffler and midpipe included. I have found US Seller that can sell me this for $1100 US + Shipping.

To buy the EU Spec PE exhaust (81) comes without the midpipe would cost me $1050 dollars delivered to AUS + estimated resonator delete $150 = Total $1200 AUD

If I could get the US spec delivered to AUS for around the similar price it would be worth while as there is no custom work involved and if I sold the car I could simply put back the orginal OEM exhaust.

That is my thinking anyways.

At this point in time I think best value for money is the US PE exhaust. But that might all change depending on freight.

Please let us know how it goes. I was looking at your realoem links, but I couldn't figure out which parts numbers correspond to 65mm, and 70mm. I thought it was a bit bizarre as they seem to use the same part numbers in both cases. I'll go and measure the pipe when I get a moment, but I am not sure if that really matters too much anyway.

John - Toby from BMWMiniparts has come back to me and confirmed that this part number: 18.30.7.566.932 is 70mm converter.

Description below:
MIDDLE SILENCER SERIES
SPARE PART AS WELL DUE TO THE DIFFERENT
PIPE DIAMETERS
PART NUMBER IS 18.30.7.566.932

Can any body confirm that the EU version and US version would have the same mounting points? This is the last thing on my list to confirm.

Guys has any one measured the diameter of their Y pipes on the standard exhaust? this is the only thing I need to check but cant get underneath my car as I have no jack to measure them.

I am pretty sure that the US PE Exhaust Y pipes are 55mm if these are the same then I will be comfortable purchasing the PE exhaust (US Spec) to install

It will cost me all up $1400 AUD delivered to my door.

Gents, I just placed the order on the exhaust from BMW mini parts. Took my car in for a service and confirmed diameter of the pipes so we are good to go! Hopefully no issues!

Exhaust will cost me all up about $1400 delivered to AUS.

Evan from getbmwparts has been great
