Florida drivers
Now, is it me, or does most/everyone agree about FL drivers (not directly to Bimmer drivers ...so take it ez on me), that they've lost the idea of common sense?
My family took a visit to the Miami/Fort Lauderdale area this past weekend. Unfortunately I got Toyota Avalon as a loaner. Right off the bat, in the flow of traffic, I noticed that drivers seem to drive SO SLOW, even below the speed limit, and even enjoy driving side by side (or rather, in each other's blindspot). I didn't realize that getting on the freeway was worst. At least drivers can accelerate, but anytime you get an open lane, you get some loser cutting you off, jumping right into your lane. There just isn't any road etiquette taught to most of these folks (ex: cruising on the fast lane, cutting off drivers, honking just 1/2 sec after the light turns from red to green, etc...list grows on). Well, glad to be back home these days, especially back in my E90.

it's not just you, i've driven down there before and people drive crazy! In Miami at least on the interstates they go quite a bit faster than the rest of florida I think. I know in jacksonville if I'm doing 75 or 80 on the interstate i'm flying past everyone and they flash their lights at me like i'm a lunatic? On non interstate roads they drive well under the speed limit, right next to each other. Also I've discovered that in florida, the far right lane is now the fast lane.

I recently drove down to Miami from Indiana in my 3er, and all I could think was FL had crazy fast drivers. I remember a semi passing me when I was doing 80. I didn't even know they could get up to 80!

I've been living in FL for more than 4 years and your right about FL drivers lol. FL is #3 behind CA and TX for car accidents. Thank God I learned how to drive in NY. NY drivers are more defensive and alert drivers

welcome to miami.
the sad part is that miami-dade county is much worse than broward... whenever i drive down to miami i feel as if i'm much more likely to get into an accident because of the way people drive down there.

Miami is defenatly one of the worse in the country. Just for the one fact that there's a bunch of people here from other countries that get there license in a day. With a bunch of people like that you can imagine how unsafe these streets are almost everyday I have an encounter with a horrible driver.

We are full of retired people not from Florida, most are from up north and they are old people, so they drive very slow.
oh, and many people down for vacation too, they don't now the area well and no need to go fast with a car full of kids. Last edited by Dtireshop; 07-21-2010 at 05:49 PM.. |

We have to do something to keep all them tourist from wanting to come back. Anyone else that wants to leave SoFla, don't forget to take a friend.
Now that I've said my peace to defend our pride the OP took a shot at, I can truly say Miami-Dade is by far the worst of the worst when it comes to SoFla drivers. Miami's smorgasbord of arrogant immigrants make for some of the nastiest, most inconsiderate piece of sh!t drivers I've ever encountered in my 18 years of driving. And I grew up here, but having lived in Italy, SoCal, Broward, and Palm beach county, I can honestly say that Miami drivers just suck and I normally regret every gesture of courtesy I try to extend my fellow drivers. end rant/vent

I went to Miami/Ft. Lauderdale recently and the drivers there are definitely some of THE worst. I live in Tampa and I thought traffic was bad here. Well, the Miami area blows away Tampa.
It's like being in a different country over there. I've been to some Latin American countries, and seen/experienced how they drive, and I swear that's the way they drive in Miami. There are no road rules. It's just every driver for themselves, make your own lane, and get out of my way mentality. Don't get me wrong, I like the area as I've been there several times, especially Miami Beach, but if there's one thing I don't miss it's the traffic and those crazy drivers.

In all seriousness, I really don't think alot of them are that way out of spite, I just think that where they are from, everyone is a D-bag driver. They don't sweat honking horns or the occasional fender bender. Try taking a cab ride almost anywhere in Mexico, PR, Jamaica, etc.... |

I get close sometimes I usually take yellows and it will turn red when I'm under it so it's not that bad , but I really try not to do that.

i don't mind the speeding when traffic allows...its all the young kids driving the shitty cars that sound like a boat weaving in and out of traffic for the sake of feeling their car is faster than it really is. those people bother me and the cars on the left lane going slow. just seriously...move!

Having grown up driving here (for some 15 years) I have to agree... we suck :-)
I like to think I am courteous within reason and my biggest pet peeve is just how discourteous people are down here, especially in parking lots. No one stops here if you're backing out of a spot. It's as if they think you can see them coming down the aisle @20 mph. If the hassle of dealing with people that have no insurance wasn't so bad, I'd just pull out of parking spots more aggressively than I do now. Highway driving is atrocious here too. Drivers lacking in confidence for some reason tend to drive as far to the left as possible, sometimes making it to the fast lane. I think they do this because they don't want to deal with the constant in-and-out of the lanes near the exits. Meanwhile, more daring drivers that are often in a hurry have to use the free lanes (often the ones on the right) to pass the slower drivers. That leaves the alert drivers in the center lanes crawling a bit faster than the left lanes and dealing with the headaches of the hot heads going around everyone else. These are just a few of the problems with driving in SoFla. The worst part is that I learned to drive here. Then I drove around the country and found myself sometimes struggling to fit into the driving styles wherever I was so that I wouldn't grab the attention of local police. |
