Looking at buying an 07 335xi

Hey, Im looking at a nice low mile 2007 335xi. Hpfp was replaced in 2012 and the turbos have been replaced last year as well, both at the dealer. Other than the usual stuff is there anything else to be worried about or look for considering this is the first model year and the well documented issues for some parts. Thanks.

Water pump will probably need replacing. Just be prepared for that.

Get a 2008 on up instead. 2007 wasn't the best year for the 335i.

That was the original plan, but I finally found a Montego blue e90 335xi with sport package and a manual. Basically needle in a haystack stuff so Im trying to find out if it is worth the risk or not

07 was a fine year. I was told by a wise man to buy on maintenance records and terms of sale, not year and miles. I too am looking at buying an 07 335i and have done a ton of research on them, go search for my thread in the n54 engine thread. I think it was called 07 335i.

Personally, I'd go with an 09 or 10. Last years of the N54 seemed to have most of the bugs worked out / preventative measures taken (e.g. revised front subframe to prevent power steering pulley from being damaged)

I'm happy with my '07 but also losing some sleep at night knowing the fact that there are some critical and expensive parts on the car which have later been revised due to known problems.

Great stuff, thanks. I have done a ton of looking as well and all the usual issues are there and outlined. It will get driven spiritedly but I wouldn't say hard or abusive and it will be my daily so I cant see getting it tuned any time soon. As usual, maintenance records are key.

I have an 07 335i with 120k on it. Water pump was done at 75k along with the HPFP around that time. I did coils and plugs at 100k and it made a noticable difference. Didn't realize how much the coils had been gradually missing.

I had a problem (and I believe this is the case with most 07s) with the driver's side motor mount getting weak around 105k which caused the engine to shift enough that the power steering pump made contact with the subframe. The first time this happened it was just a shredded serpentine belt and I just assumed it was due for replacement. Then it shredded another belt within 200 miles along with busting the power steering pulley in half. I ended up replacing the belt, puller, and motor mount. It wasn't too expensive or too difficult of a job to repair but probably something you'll run into.

Another fun and more recent issue was my battery failing in the cold winter. I replaced the battery and still had a no start condition with a steering wheel lock mechanism failure light on the dash. After some research I ended up buying an OBDII to USB cable and using the BMW apps to reset the counters in the ECM which allowed the car to start however it was down for about a week while I was waiting on the cable and figuring out the software.

Also I have the JB4 Stage 3, DCI, BMW Perf exhaust mod, and VRSF downpipes. I am by no means nice to the car and it has taken a beating with pretty common maintenance items and keeps asking for more, no complaints.

How long are the turbo's good for on the 2007's? I just bought a stock one with 88k miles and want to put a tune, DCI and downpipes on it. I'm worried about the turbos so i will probably run a very conservative tune on it until i learn more about what they can handle / replacement options in case they do go out.

I love my '07 335xi, purchased used a little over a year ago with 56k on the clock, every option available, sport, cold, idrive, heated seats, etc. Check service records and condition like any other used car purchase. These cars are so cheap now, you can find great deals. The sport pack on the 07 xi isn't a true sport suspension, just FYI. The turbos are warrantied for 82k or 8 years from in service date if the failure is from the wastegate rattle. Mine rattles and has been checked, but the turbos are fine. I will go out of my 8 years this spring at around 70k now and don't really fear it anymore. If they go, I will just replace them. They are now affordable replacement parts and have come down in price a lot, not to mention the upgrade options (600+ hp). I did some deferred maintenance like the plugs and a bad coil and the valve cover gasket and then added new shocks and struts, DCIs and a JB+ for fun. The car is a blast to drive, don't hesitate.

Everyone is always afraid of the 07, I have a FBO 01/07 build 335i and have never had any major issues with the car, I think it's a hit or miss

It's common sense that the first year of any new car is always going to have more problems as car manufacturer will fix the kinks later on. The only thing I know is the 07s have a different wastegate arm and a DME that can fail. Other than that it should be solid if it's well maintained.

both my turbos on 2008 335xi were replaced due to wastegate rattle, one under warranty, the other out of warranty (ouch). my water pump recently died at 109k miles.
