DIY: 335i Exhaust Sound Mod. Better, and even easier than golf tee mod.

I read through this entire thread last night. I woke up this morning and decided to deactivate the exhaust flapper on my 2007 335i sedan by pulling the vacuum line off the actuator underneath the car, plugging it with a golf tee, and then zip tying the line off to the exhaust hanger that is closest to the rear bumper (basically the only place I could zip tie it off far away from the exhaust so that heat doesn't affect the zip ties).
I didn't even know our cars had this exhaust actuator until I stumbled across this thread. Very noticeable difference in the lower RPM range (1,000-3,000 or so). Nice little growl to it. Very pleased I found out about this. Very easy to reverse by cutting the zip ties, pulling out the golf tee, and plugging the line back in before service. I know this DIY was for pulling the hardness out of the controller in the truck compartment, but it appears the consensus is that going about this that way may leave a code for the dealer to see... and that pulling the line and plugging it will not. FWIW, those of you jamming BBs into the line blows my mind. There is probably no way you can get that thing out unless you cut the line downstream of where you pushed it in. Thankfully the vacuum hose has some extra slack in it. Use a golf tee or some other tapered object than you can pull out! |

And how, on a turbo car that does not rely on back pressure, do you figure that? I guess BMW is ok with that to then, because you do realize that @WOT the valve opens all the way up, right? So my question is, how do you make claims about losing horsepower on the top end with absolutely nothing to back it up? Listen, if your going to make statements like the one you did and have the hard data to back it up, then by all means, fire away. But, if you are just spouting YOUR OPINION which somehow just MAGICALLY TURNED INTO FACT AFTER SWIRLING AROUND IN YOUR BRAIN FOR 5 SECONDS, then please keep it to yourself as to not confuse those out there who have limited knowledge of their vehicle. Just because you believe it's true, most definitely doesn't mean it is. I see this SO much on this board (and others), and ITS MY OPINION that's why there are so many reposts of the same question over and over again; misinformation that leads to confusion about what the effects of a certain mod will be. |

I did this yesterday as well on my 2011 335i xDrive Coupe (automatic) and it sounds AMAZING! i did notice that the gas in the car started to drop in MPG for some reason, but i think its because i was in traffic and just happened to pay attention to it a bit more then usual lol

NICE. I wish I had done this sooner. The sound is changed and much deeper than before, especially at low RPM.
At first, I was reluctant to do this because I thought it is the same effect as when the butterfly valve opened (30 seconds after engine startup). Well I was wrong, it is not the same. It also got rid of that cheap metallic sound in the exhaust. |

I did this yesterday. My Cobb shows the code P2F6C which is Exhaust Flap Control. Who cares it does sound more audible and while I am flashing the ECU before service I can go to the back of the car and plug it back in.

Plugged mine in the day before my service appointment and dealer didn't mention a thing. My brother forgot to plug his back in and the same dealer kept his car for a day and a half because they couldn't find the problem associated with the code lol

Just did this DIY with my 2008 E92 335 and I did realize the sound of the exhaust sounded a little deeper and louder. However, the downside of this DIY in my opinion is the rattle sound it creates and also the car lost a bit of power.

New member here with a 2011 335i xDrive. This sounds so much like the fuse mod on the C6 corvette with NPP exhaust!
That was the first mod I did on my 2009 C6 and I LOVED the sound. I'm not sure I want the Bimmer to be "louder" especially considering it's stock right now with only 250 miles on it. I'm still breaking it in. |

I got the SEL a couple of weeks after I did this mod. I plugged the wire back in and it disappeared not long after.
