He said it's undetectable by the dealer, not undetectable at all.

In the usual course of events, the dealer should not be able to detect it, as even while reading out it does not give out any error codes. If the dealer however suspects that the ECU has been tampered with (and there might be indications such as the exceeding of the OEM speed limiter or rev limiter which I assume a dealer could also read out - if he has reason to do so which he normally would not, except in case of warranty issues), here in Germany he would send the ECU to Munich where it can be read out and analysed - and obviously the modifications would be detected. I don't know however how this would be dealt with in the US.

ESS - correct me if I'm wrong on this!

With each progressive Progman, BMW mostly makes emissions-related changes that mostly have little to no effect on performance. The US is very strict about things like this. However, occasionally, they do update a throttle curve, a wastegate control, a fuel pump threshold, a "tune detection" function, etc. If a new Progman contains a change that shows a marked improvement in the ESS mules, these changes are blended into the current flash. Even before that though, ESS figured out most of the changes BMW has made since 23.2 long before BMW got around to incorporating them in the US; things like lurching in the auto, turbo lag, and touchy throttle ramps.

What ESS then does is when you get your ESS flash, you have all of the tune plus the lastest Progman goodies applied to your DME without ever changing the software number (Progman). So, to the dealer, you still have the same Progman as your service history shows, but with all the latest improvements of the newest version already included.

Did I make understanding it better or worse?
How do you handle the "turbo lag" and wastegate control in your stage 3 ?

Is it working like pre 29.2 version, where the wastegates are always closed except when peak boost is achieved or do you use the complex algorithm of 32.1 "turbo retrofit" where wastgates are open under certain circumstances causing some lag?

It would be great that the EES flash restores really 100% of the turbo response like pre 29.2 version

This could be a definitive solution to the "turbo lag" that all of us suffer since 29.2

I apologize for the delay in updates, this forum only lets us post in this thread every once in a while... (apparently to limit bumping our own threads I suppose).

To answer your question: Because the programming interface just recently finished testing. Now, dealers have the option of purchasing the dealer kit and doing flashes on-site. However, it is expensive, so only serious dealers will be able to apply. Dealer inquiries can be sent to sales @ esstuning.com.

Until then, it is quicker to send in the DME.

I understand. I'm just shocked that no shop in So Cal has jumped on this...I mean it's freaking So Cal...More BMW's are probably sold here than the rest of the United States..And it's the tuning Capitol of the World..

Welcome then! I'm looking even more forward to my own DME reprogramming then.

Which stage did you get? And what are your other mods, if any? Would love to hear your impressions.

I have read in another thread that a stage 4 tune is currently under development, which is specificly adapted to aftermarket downpipes. Could you elaborate on that, if possible? I would also be curious whether such tune would only work for catless downpipes or also for those with high-flow race cats (as I will be getting one of the latter).

I got the stage 2 flash. Otherwise, everything else is stock. The first thing that jumped out to me is throttle response. There is no lag. Just power on demand. The power gain is night and day compared to stock. Last night I took a turn to fast and spun out. Granted I had traction off and gunned it, but to me it's serious power, not to be taken lightly. It was a wake up call for me to respect what this car is capable of. I will be joining the local autocross club so I can experience this car in the right enviroment. Today I put a couple gallons of 100 octane in and it adapted within 2 miles. Hopefully I will be able to dyno with 93 and 100 this weekend.

I'd love to see your dynos and would like to hear about any dealer run-in's you may have in the future. This tune is quickly winning me over... but I've gotta fight the urge for now.

Pursuant to information available to me, ESS is presently testing an adaptation of their tune specifically for aftermarket downpipes (for both catted and catless, I believe). They will post here with more details as soon as the testing is done and dyno numbers are available.

ESS never ceases to amaze, i loved marvlphx's ZHP and was actually thinking about getting it before the 335.
