I've read they don't do much for our vehicles... and just to give your manifold a clean as well as walnut blasting the intake ports on your heads. Something to do with heat causing oil vapors... bypassing the catch can for the most part. But don't quote me on that.

An Oil Catch Can was never designed for preventing oil/carbon build up on the intake valves. What it was designed for, and will successfully do, is catch the free floating oil vapor that usually gets caught in an FMIC, Intake Piping, Charge Pipe, DVs/BOV, etc. Obviously it's impossible to catch 100% of the oil vapor, but this will definitely catch a significant amount of the vapors.

Oil blow through occurs on every N54 from some degree, even completely stock cars. Anyone who's seen an FMIC be installed can confirm this just by looking in the end tanks or stock couplers, chances are there is some oil residue.

After 3000 miles.

It reduces oil blow by into the intercooler charge pipe and intake the intake manifold.

If your concern is preventing carbon build up on the intake valves you will be disappointed find out that is inevitable as it is a characteristic of direct injection engines since the injectors do not pass fuel over the intake valves any longer.

However the OCC still helps in keeping oil out of the intake tract in general.

Definitely think heavy mod N54 would benefit from:

* RB TURBO PCV Valve
* NEW BMW CRANKCASE FLAPPER TUBE

AND

*GRP 5 OIL LIKE REDLINE / MOTUL/ AMSOIL which I think work perfectly with an OCC in supporting reduced valve intake deposits due to low NOACK + improved ring seal + temp control

High Flash point + Impv Piston Ring Seal + lwr temps & Functioning Flapper + BMS OCC + RB TURBO PCV = HEALTHY / CLEANER VALVES.

Once the valves are walnut blasted -- the car runs GREAT and we all want to keep it that way.

Its not just 1 fix (OCC) it is the combination of several that supports a clean engine.

i personally think its useless. walnut blasting is getting cheap, only 350 at some places. might as well do that every 50k miles and ensure no carbon buildup for sure.

most BMW mechanics laugh whenever i ask about OCC lol
