"Pointless car"?? NOT!
What you are looking at is the basis of the next M3 motor.. Turbo I-6
The V8 M3 is a gas guzzler and let face it.. 95% of all M3's are daily Drivers..
This car is about "efficiency".. almost M3 performance... and 37% better milage...
Cost of ownership is going to be less....Insurance, tires, service..
The M3 is a very special car.. do not get me wrong, love to have one,
Sure a "used" M3 is about the same price.. so is a USED Porsche 996 Turbo (23 mpg highway).. and well now there is PERFORMANCE and far more "modable"... Let's compare apples to apples...

This car has clearlly stated objective... "capture those who want something better than a ordinary 335i, but do not want the cost and expences of an M3" , A gap filler, and one that will be a blast to drive, with little guilt at the gas pump... And factory Warranty

The CLEAR POINT OF THE CAR... "Efficient FUN"...

Nice package for the 335 they should do a E90 in a IS package. Well at least I have a E90 M3.

This is no more the basis of the next M3 motor than any other N54 or N55 is. The M3 motor will probably have a lot of changes from both the N54 and N55, just as the S63 has many changes from the N63.

I agree with the basic premise of what you are saying. I don't necessarily agree an M3 is more expensive to own than a 335i (being that I own both).

I do not want an M3 for the 20 mpg highway. I get just about 30 mpg highway on my 335, and I drive a lot. I have already logged over 30k miles in less than a year of ownership! 20 mpg vs. 30 mpg is a huge difference at those levels. I am sure there are other people out there that think that mpg difference is large as well. If the M3 had the TT I6, it would be perfect in my book. If I get promoted and get to drive less, then maybe an M3 would be in my future. But, for now, that 335is looks awesome, although I would prefer 6MT instead of DCT.

Everyone's a critic. I love everything about this car. If it had an LSD it would be perfect.

This 335 IS model will compete against the AUDI S4 Supercharged model and similar cars in this performance level. I think BMW did a great job. To hear people worry about what others say about a fake M3 or getting a M3 look at what they drive Im sure its not a BMW!!!!

It's too bad they didn't make a 335is sedan, so it would be a direct competitor to the S4. Instead, the car is more of an S5 competitor even thought the S5 coupe still has the V8 for now (convertible does have the 3L SC V6 like the S4).

I have a question not sure anyone can answer, although I don't believe it has been answered yet. Hopefully there is someone who can clarify.

My question has to do with the suspension and the chasis dynamics. If you were to compare a 2007 335i with sports package (non Mpackage not available at that time) to a 2011 335is are they essentially the same. Meaning, if you upgraded the exhaust and engine tune would you essentially have the exact same car less the aesthetic upgrades.

Thanks for any insights.

Yes, same car... more show than go... in fact that should be the badge on the trunk.

That's pretty much what the debate is, I guess. Are there enough improvements (plus having a new car) to warrant paying the premium for buying the new car, and losing depreciation money on the old one. I think if I hit 80k-ish by next fall I might order one.

No, if it had x-drive and 6MT available, it would be perfect. If it has neither, I'm out.
